Epsom baptisms 1920 (complete)
« on: Saturday 05 January 08 15:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone.
Joan Eillen COLLIS and her twin brother Philip Charles James COLLIS, children of James and Ada COLLIS were born 15th April 1920 at Lower Court Road, Epsom. I am trying to discover the date and church of the twins baptism, assuming that event actually took place.
I do have the birth certificate of Joan Eileen COLLIS.
Many thanks for any help on this.
                                                      Regards,
                                                               Scobie

I think you firstly ought to find out the nearest church to the Epsom address and then go along to the local records office where the parish records are held to look at  the church baptism records, they may have been baptised where their parents were married, or if they were actually baptised in hospital, I am one of a twin and I was apparently dying after I was born I was so ill, I was going to be baptised in the hospital till I turned the corner and here I am still today, thriving.

Just a suggestion

regards
Louisa Maud

Thank you, Louisa Maud, for your suggestions. I suspect that may well be the course I shall have to follow, but it will have to be at a much later date. I was hoping that I would not have to make the journey to Surrey, but it seems likely that I shall have to do so at some stage.
                                      Regards

If you get in touch with Surrey  they may tell you what they charge, or even put you in contact with someone who will do it for you, sometimes this works out less that the travelling expenses but their is nothing like finding the info yourself, many a time I have found something quite out of the blue and have wanted to shout out "yes" or "got them" but most of these places are a lot like libraries where one has to be a little quieter.

Happy hunting

Hello Scobie

Do you have the marriage certificate of James and Ada? The twins may have been baptised in the same church. ???

I live 5 minutes away from Epsom but I don't know the churches near Lower Court Road. Next time I drive through I will have a look around (it may be at the weekend). In the meantime it would be helpful to know whether I am looking for a Roman Catholic or Anglican church.  ;)

Scobie,

I live in Epsom and sometime this week I will go and have a look through the local baptism records held on fiche at the family history centre in Ewell library.

I just got back from Ewell library. They have a lot of parish registers there on fiche but very little as recent as 1920.

I was able to check the baptism index for Christ Church which runs up to 1922 but your Collises were not listed there.

It will be necessary to check the parish registers for other churches which are held at the records office in Woking. Very few of the 20th century registers have been filmed, so it will be a question of looking through the original registers. See http://www.rootschat.com/links/02hv/ for a list of what's available.

If this is a Church of England family the most local church to Lower Court Road is St Barnabas in Temple Road.  Another possibility would be the parish church, St Martin's.

Hello all correspondants.
I am so pleased and impressed with such a good response to my post. With regard to the suggestion by Amanda t, James Collis and Ada Morley were married 12th November 1918 at St. Barnabas church in Epsom (they were due to be married 11th November 1918, Armistice Day, but ended up travelling around London on an open-top bus and married next day instead). The marriage certificate gives them as resident at Lower Court Road, so St. Barnabus church would seem a likely first option.
Hopefully there will be more to come, but if not I will contact the record office at Woking.
In the meantime, many, many thanks to you all.
                                                    Regards,
