Look up request for possible Baker family in Gedney (?) Lincs
« on: Tuesday 08 January 08 14:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks.
My grandfather George Baker b 1866 in England d 1922 in Glamorgan, had a family disagreement about being sent to boarding school (so the brief family story goes).

I knew nothing about him, tracked his death to Llantrithyd (Glamorgan) in 1922 via church records, and apparently he was born in England.

A rumour in the family says he left school to work on a farm in the Cowbridge area, that had recently been purchased by people he knew, so he followed them across. He had no further contact with his family, ignoring requets to get in touch.

I may have found him living with a family (Thomas) in St Hillary, just west of Llantrithyd in 1891.
George BAKER, boarder, unm, 25, labourer, bn Gidney*, Lincolnshire
(*should be spelt Gedney)

I have tried to find a Baker family (and George) in Gedney, without success, can anyone help please.

Any info on the family and links I can use to track more details in the area (Parish records etc) would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks Brian

Hi Brian,

In the 1901 Welsh census at Ogmore, Glamorgan, RG 13/5049 folio 11, there's a George BAKER, married (no wife mentioned anywhere), aged 46 boarding with a family. Birthplace is given as Sleaford, Lincolnshire.

Going back to the 1891 entry I think the age should be 35. The first digit appears to be a very badly written 3.

This would put this chap's year of birth at c1855.

In the GRO birth index there is:

March quarter 1854
George Wattam BAKER, Spilsby 7a 488

September quarter 1854
George BAKER, Sleaford, 7a 351

September quarter 1855
George BAKER, Bourn 7a 269

December quarter 1855
George BAKER, Spilsby 7a 476
George Anthony BAKER, Horncastle, 7a 463

Gedney comes under the Holbeach registration and it is quite possible that your grandfather didn't know where he was born.

Hi
thanks for this input, it gets more complex.

The date of birth from his age and death in the church records (ages ussually a bit here and there arent they) does actually give us 1866, hence the St Hilary item seemed OK, and while there is no births in Gedney, as you say, Holbeach covers that area, but then again, who knows for sure at the moment.  As you are obviously aware, Ognore isnt too far away, but St Hillary and Llantrithyd are so close, I will have to have a look at the actual 1901 when I get a chance to see the hand written response, for the age.
I think I am looking for a surprising find from somewhere or another, as he left home as a schoolboy its unlikely he took his birth certificate, and passports were not too likely either were they (ha ha) !!!!!!, hence his marriage certificate is the first true (maybe) record, but nly gives where he lived at that time.
Not too sure about accents, the census says Gidney, which we know is Gedney, would a linconshire accent pronounce it that way to welsh ears ?
Have since found a few Bakers born in Gedney but all in 1830 or earlier, possible parent, but then why not on the census if still living there in 1841 and 51.
Anyway thanks again, have a good evening folks, grettings from South Wales.

On your grandfather's marriage certificate, does it give the name and occupation of his father?

Sorry to say it but, if he ran away from home, he could have changed his name as well  :o
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.
