My Problem lies with Enoch - we searched for a long time but could not find his marriage  - but quite by chance last week I came across the marriage of an Enoch Bartley Hammonds,  I can find no reference any where else to a Enoch Bartley hammonds so sent for the certificate to see - sure enough it is him but he calls his father adam Bartley Hammonds.

Absolutely nowhere on any census birth death or marriage record does anyone else in the family use the name Hammonds.

We have no idea where it has come from and why he is using it just for a marriage.

any ideas?

Teresa

We had the same thing in my husband's family tree.
The extra surname was in fact his mother's name, as he was born before his parents married.
I see you don't have a father or mother listed for Adam so perhaps you had better look for those. I suggest his mother was a Miss Hammonds!

Or ..as it is more usual to use a mother's name as the middle name - Perhaps his mother was Bartley and his father was Hammonds (but they were possibly not married or he was not around).

Or - perhaps Adam's mother remarried and his step-father was Hammonds?

These are indeed possibilities I have considered - seems awful strange that just the one child used it tho and on only one occasion - Adam himself NEVER used it.

so far Adams birth details have proved elusive his birth place according to census varies and without access to the records office I am stuck on that one so its a brickwall that could take a while to be knocked down

Thanks for your thoughts

I know some people who use the double-barrel surname on some occasions, but not others.

I read somewhere that it was often used if the child was born out of wedlock. Could he have been the result of an affair?

Or might he have been fostered by another family and taken their surname?

Or could it have been a middle name ~ or some other name ~ & the registrar became confused?

Hi Teresa,

Apologies if this turns out to be one of several posts - am having computer problems. Teresa I am descended from Adam Bartley through Priscilla and was delighted to stumble on your post as we (another Priscilla descendant and I) had hit a brick wall which your post went a long way to explain. Would like to get in touch re this family if you could reply. Cheers Narissa

Hi. I'm a descendant of Adam Bartley through his daughter, Priscilla, and have been looking for further info on Adam for quite a while to no avail. And then I came across an entry on Ancestry.com.uk under England, Select Births and Christenings for a "George Bartley or Hammonds" born in Astley Abbots, Shropshire in 1809 to father "William Bartley or Hammonds" and mother, Mary. Could George be a brother to Adam? I can't seem to find any further info but others may well do so. Please post here if you do. Thanks. Maxine
