Meenagh
« on: Monday 14 January 08 19:12 GMT (UK) »
I would be grateful if anyone could give me any info. about some Meenaghs who emigrated to US.
There were two sisters-Catherine aged 15 and Lizzie aged 11,both from Omagh. They left Liverpool in 1896 on board The Penland and were heading for 221 Philip St. in Philadelphia. They were going to a James Meenagh.Their surname was also Meenagh.
I would like to know who their parents were and if they were related to a Mary Meenagh of 39 Castle lane Omagh or Samuel Meenagh of 41 Castle Lane.

In trying to find my Grandfather's roots(Meenagh/Mc Aleer) I know that he lived at 39 Castle Lane.
Their parish would have been Drumreagh I think.
I would be very grateful for any info.relating to any of these people.

Had a look at Ellis Island and couldn't see Catherine or Lizzie arriving in 1896. Maybe it wasn't New York? Will have another look.
Did find a Catherine Meenagh b.c1892, sister Maggie, sister Alice b.c1884, sister Mary b.c1881 all arriving in New York and going to Philadelphia at various dates (father- Bernard Meenagh Ard/Altdrummond Mountfield Omagh.

Dear Mary,
Thank you for the info. They could be the people I am looking for.
On my Granfather's (John Meenagh) marriage cert.his father was named as James though. His mother was known as Eliza.
It seems that Eliza had these three chn.by the same father but he wasn't named on the birth cert. So they must have been known as McAleer and then changed to Meenagh when they all left for Glasgow. That seems strange as they were all adults then, moving to a new country so their illegitimacy wouldn't have been known there.
Of course he may have been the father but just did not acknowledge this when they were born.
Eliza was born in 1854 and was staying in Castle Lane,Omagh at the home of Mary Meenagh when John was born.
I think Meenagh is a common name in Tyrone so whether the Catherine or Lizzie I mentioned were related ,I don't know.
Anything else you could find out would be much appreciated.
Thankyou,
MMcLM (also a Mary !)
