ESSERY/FLOYDE Barnstaple
« on: Saturday 19 January 08 00:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi ALL
i am a complete novice at all this so i am hoping that someone can help me
LYNTON/ BARNSTAPLE Area Floyd / Essery
I am trying to find a marriage record for Beatrice Essery & George Floyd/Floyde
i think Beatrice Essery was born in Lynton 1895 and i think she married George in 1916 in Barnstaple - where would i look to find a record of the marriage - parish record or maybe a register office,
also where would i start to look for any children registered to the above people i think they may have had at least one daughter who was named
Beatrice Olive Floyd

Thanks

Hi Jem and welcome to Rootschat  :)

Here is the marriage you are looking for.

Beatrice Essery to Floyde Dec quarter 1916 Barnstaple  Vol 5b - Page 938 modified it, I read the above line, sorry.  :-[

You can order the certificate either direct from Southport online.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/  or from your local registrars office.

The children will be more difficult as there are no census's on which they may appear. it will not be easy even going through the births index's as Floyde is quite a common name.

Hope this helps.

Patrish.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

There are a couple of ways of finding marriages so I have listed the most commonly used websites below for you

I have checked the full GRO index and here is the reference for their marriage which will enable you to purchase a copy online at www.gro.gov.uk - the cost of copies is £7

Beatrice A Essery/George H Floyde December quarter 1916 Barnstaple Volume 5B Page 938

freebmd.rootsweb.com  (incomplete but excellent)

www.familysearch.org (free website but best for BMD's in the 1800's and before)

Full GRO index available at your nearest main library or online if you have an Ancestry subscription

You can look up BMD at FreeBMD-some areas have been transcribed up to and after the dates you are seeking

Ancestry have the full BMD index which for a time you could search for free-but now you need a subscription

I have found the marriage reference - on full index

Dec qtr 1916
Barnstable
Beatrice A Essery
George H Floyde
Volume 5b Page 938

The only way to get full details is by purchasing the certificate-that will give fathers names and occupations -and witnesses sometimes are family members

I have found on freeBMD what looks like Beatrice A's birth reg
Beatrice Ada Essery
Jun qtr 1898
barnstable
Volume 5b 426

to look for children born to the couple if it is after 1912 the mothers maiden name is given which helps- you can put in just surname and mothers maiden name and see what comes up.
Before 1912 it is just guesswork unless you wish to purchase certs - however you can specifiy when applying for certs what the parents names should be - and only about £3 search fee will be charged if it turns out to be the wrong certificate.

If you are requesting a look up and you know a middle name, then that helps with the search

Don't be afraid to request a look up on here - RootsChatters are always willing to help out.

Welcome to RootsChat - and good hunting

This could be Beatrice on the 1901 census for 9 Cambridge St Plymouth - all b Plymouth

Joseph Essery 40  tailor & outfitter
Kate Essery 41
Harry Essery 14
Frederick Essery 12
Kate Essery 9
Joseph Essery 7
Beatrice Essery 4
Hilda Essery 8 months

Births Jun 1896

Essery  Beatrice May    Plymouth  5b 267   see reply below

but marriage entry shows Beatrice A

Another 1901 but she would only have been 16/17 when she married - Butterford - Inwardleigh all b Inwardleigh except Mary

John Essery 45  agric labourer
Mary Essery 36  b North Lew
Eliza Essery 11
Beatrice A Essery 9 months
