A bit late perhaps to add to this thread but I know a little about Calfield (Caulfield) which is actually to the West of Langholm. It was originally inhabited by Scotts and appears to have been owned in their own right as they were referred to as the Scotts of Calfield. Thomas Beattie's, in his diary (1788-1821), which is in the Dumfries Ewart library, describes the Scotts of Calfield as among the most prominent families in the county in the time of his grandfather, after the Scotts of Davington.
My ancestor, William Scott of Meikledale married a daughter of James Scott of Calfield in the 1720's. Another daughter married Gilbert Elliot, father of Major-General William Elliot of Larriston.
William Scott of Meikledale spent all his life in Canonbie so any contact between Calfield and Canonbie would not be so improbable.
James Scott of Calfield later became James Scott of Beltenmont and his son was a vinter in Dumfries.
