John's birth certificate will list his parents, father's occupation, exact date and placce of birth. Try searching for extracted birth record on IGI at www.familysearch.org
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Apologies, my line just dropped out as I was posting.  Both dates should read 1873.

Thanks for the info but I am still searching as there were a lot of Ruanes and a singular lack of imagination regarding first names.

I have a marriage certification showing John Ruane was married to Annie Hoyle in St Michaels Church on 26th Nov 1902 in the presence of James Earley and Mary Caffrey.  I know that his father was Patrick (from the same cert) and Annes father was Henry Hoyle but I have no proof as yet of his mother who I think was Mary Healy.

I have details of his descendants up to the present day in case anyone is interested.

Any other hints would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Michaelx, do you know where in County Mayo the family are from? As for singular a lack of imagination when it comes to names - tell me about it.  Our lot were truly hopeless. There are Ruanes everywhere in Mayo.  You really need to pin point an area so you are able to find the relevant church and it's records.

Have a look at the following websites:

1901 Leitrim Roscommon has a fully transcribed index for Mayo:
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census

Griffiths Valuation which was a land valuation around 1850s has an index at :
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

Were they Catholic or Protestant?  The only other way I can think of at the moment is ordering up the film from Latter Day Saints for the relevant years and going through it.   www.familysearch.org

Was John and Annie's marriage conducted in the UK or Mayo?  If it was the UK, have you been able to find them on the UK 1901 Census?

I think I have asked enough quetions for the moments.

Thanks for your help and suggestions. So far still no joy.

John Ruane & Annie Hoyle were married in St Michaels (RC) Newcastle on Tyne on 26th Nov 1902

John shows up on the 1901 cenus with his brother Michael, Ages 24 and 2,  respectively as coal miners living in digs at Orchard Terrace Lemington.

The entry indicates that they were both born in Gleanllen, Mayo (or something like that as the entry is not easy to read) .  However I am unable to identify anywhere that looks remotely like that. It has been suggested that this may have been a farm or a remote hamlet that no longer exists. No church is mentioned that I have found so far.

Family lore says that the birthplace was Ballina. But again no details have been found.

Annie Hoyle shows up living in the same area, Lemmington, which is part of Newcastle, working in an asylum and it would appear that this was a move from the Lancashire area where she also worked at the infamous (now) Goosenargh Asylum.

As before any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello.  It looks like 'Glencullen' to me (but that's only my opinion) and that place is way out west of Ballina between Bangor Erris and Belmullet.  Does any of this mean anything to you?  I will double check and get back to you.  Maybe someone else will have a look and say what they think.
