new pic - identify scottish regiment please
« on: Tuesday 22 January 08 15:09 GMT (UK) »
Thanks for help last time.
This photo is of another family member. Some family dispute re WW1 or WW2. Not much to go on but is likely to be either A&SH (WW1 or WW2), Black Watch (WW2) or Cameron Highlander (WW1) Help appreciated
Jen

Going by the dice pattern on the cap I would say that it is The Black Watch.

And given that he appears to have a red tie on with a white shirt (part hospital blues)...he's recuperating from wounds/illness...probably in warmer climes somewhere as the trousers appear to be KD
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come

Hmmm! Black Watch means uncle Jock, I think, but I have no idea re his war record. I was hoping this was uncle Willie but that would mean A&SH. He does have a cap like this. Not sure about recuperating - Grandad (WW1, A&SH) was wounded in Europe. Willie served in North Africa, Aden, Cyprus, Suez, Borneo and Burma. Perhaps he was ill somewhere out there and sent this photo home to gran.

I wondered about those trousers - what does KD stand for?

Hi  :)

Do none of you see the resemblance!!!  It's Uncle Jim again, only older. He has been wounded as already stated, and he is wearing a 37 pattern  web belt.

I think he has just been issued these trousers from a pool, as they don't appear to be the best of fit.  The man in the background appears to be wearing a suit, so this could be somewhere in the UK in summertime.

Yep, he is a Gordon.

Sorry, but I'm pretty sure it's not uncle Jim this time. This was one of my grans 'brave boys' collection of photos so he must be a brother - family resemblance is strong. He reminds me of my grandad (WW1) but I think the clothes are wrong for that war.. I don't think any of the others were in the Gordon Highlanders.

Also,I'm sorry I didn't make clear that uncle Jim died after the war was over having been released from POW camp and he wasn't, to my knowledge, wounded.

Could you explain what the significance of a 37 pattern web belt is please - it might ring a bell.

I am amazed that you have noticed a man in the background - I can't see him. I need to look again at the original! I may recognise him!
Thanks
Jen

Perhaps he is a 'Gordon' brother/relation of your relative.

The guy in the photo could have been ill rather than wounded suffering from sickness or disease, as the majority of men released from POW camps were in the worst of health.

Looks like you'll need to do more digging Jen, as he is not Black Watch, not Cameron, nor is he Argyll.

The belt being a 37 pattern means that the man is likely to be from around WW2 era onward.

Hmmm! We have always been told the photos were were of different sons. However I shall bow to your knowledge and consider that this one, after all, is uncle Jim again. As you say he could have been recuperating post release from POW.Perhaps he sent a second photo then. I have also now found out that he returned home on leave at the end of the war, then signed back up and returned to Germany where he died.

Now - a further request for your knowledge. I have found another photo!!! Perhaps I could prevail upon you again? I will post it separately.

Meanwhile many many thanks for all your help on these two.
