Dewis : The Mary Celeste
« on: Wednesday 23 January 08 20:47 GMT (UK) »
Have just finished reading a book about the infamous ship the "Mary Celeste". The ship was originally named the "Amazon"and was built in Economy Nova Scotia by a boatbuilder named Joshua DEWIS.

I am wondering if Joshua might have been a distant relative of mine and would like to find out if the Dewis family from Nova Scotia originally came from the UK and if so what county.

Has anyone any information they could share with me, many thanks

Here's a bit about Joshua Dewis:

According to submitted records on Ancestral File (LDS site) he and father both born in N.S. but granfather Samuel Dewhurst Dewis was born 1765 Manchester, England.

Hopefully this will work now:

If not just put 'marie celeste & nova scotia & dewis' into Google and lots of entries come up.

Odd that just gives a link to the book itself...must be our advertiser linking in...

Duh, that's what you wanted

Janice, great find...
wdytyanoidea,  If you contact the archives, they might make copies for you.
If it was a publication in other libraries, it might be let out for international loans...but it might be a one of, as they call it a compilation... so it's more than likely of records like we'd do it...

I can't access the library site, but if you check the vitals section, you will find
some BMD'S for the last name Dewis.

You might try the Internet Archives for Nova Scotia. There are several history books that might have some information about him.

More interesting stuff re their ships ( some have portraits of the actual vessels!): builder Joshua
More mariner information....Shareholders in the sailing ship the "Albert Dewis"
under owners listed:
Dewis, Joshua -  Shipwright - Parrsboro, NS  had 24 shares
Dewis, Robert - Mariner had four shares
and the father?, Samuel Farmer, farmer, no shares listed
Insurance purchased  for the above: http://www.library.dal.ca/archives/unms2.htm

says built in 1885, but I think the number listed earlier would make sense...of 1865..as this ship was lost also in the West Indies but it says year 1876...

and the Amazon, later to become the Mary Celeste...wrecked & condemned before sale ...
http://www.atlantictallships.ca/gallery.php?action=display&OutputType=Ships&ID=304&lang=e

also two listings with "Dewis Spicer", Mariner...with a forename like that, he'd
likely be related as well....
