Wardell in Clapham, Southampton , Thames Ditton, Eling, New Forest and Brentwood

Im researching the Wardell family that were originally from Brentwood. The earliest I have was John born in 1799. The family move to Thames Ditton where most of John and his wife Mary's family are born. The names are George Walter 1848, Reuben 1832, Antonia 1834, Edwin 1837, Frances 1840, Victoria 1844, Albert 1842, and Arthur 1853. One was born Lotton, one southampton and one Eling.

Following the son George Walter1848, he moved to Clapham and married twice. His first wife was Maria (nee Bentley) and they had Mary Agnes 1871, Catherine 1875, Frances 1876, Ellen 1878, Lucy 1882 and Irena 1883. His second wife was Caroline Mulford and they had George Walter 1892 and Gertrude 1890.

I am particularly interested in finding more information about Mary Agnes Wardell, she was my Great Grandmother.

jen - that would be Totton rather than Lotton. The parish is still Eling (I was married there) but now the population of Totton has by far surpassed that of Eling. Any local knowledge required?

Thanks for that derek, I will change it on my family tree, its a mistranscription.

I don't know much about the family yet, Ive only gone back in detail to my 2x Great Grandfather who was George 1848, and he lived in Surrey from hs marriage onwards.


This is a long shot, but John who was born in 1799 was an artist and picture restorer when they lived in the area, do you know if there is anyway I could find out if he was well known in the area, had a studio etc?  His son Reuben was also an artist.

Im looking at all avenues to find out any info about them, other than dates that I can pull from ancestry, as it seems no one else is researching this family.
