1841 census in Reading - lookup request
« on: Thursday 06 January 05 18:29 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have access to an index for the 1841 census in Reading? If so, I'm looking for:

Josiah Howard (aged 30s+) - later a licensed victualler, but I don't know what his trade was in 1841
Emma Howard, aged 10/11, Josiah's daughter, born in Reading

Not sure of other family members.

Any help gratefully received!

Steve

Hi
I checked the 1851census  index for you , no match for Josiah Howard or Emma, only this one
(was emma 10/11 in the 1841 or 1851?)
1851 Reading St Mary Ho 107/1692, Howard Emma, age 21, folio 240 I didn't check the film for this ref but will do for further info if you think its worthwhile.
no other Howard  with same reference and no Josiah, also checked Reading St.Giles/Lawrence - nothing that was close.

Sorry but there is no index to the 1841 without an address it would be a very long trawl.....

The 1851 match does sound a possibility, Newbie. My Emma Howard was 21 in that year.

In fact, what I already have is Emma's marriage certificate from September 1851, when her age is given as 21. She was a dressmaker by trade.

Although her address at the time of her marriage was Northampton, where her husband was from, I've located the couple on later censuses (1881 and 1891), when Emma's place of birth is given as Reading, Berkshire. She had taken a couple of years off her age by then, but that seems to be quite usual!

If you do get a chance to check that reference some time, I'd be very grateful.

Many thanks for your time,

Steve

Steve,
do you have the info for the 1861 and 1871 census? if not let me have her husband's name and I'll find it for you,
