Toronto Obit look up please
« on: Sunday 27 January 08 15:04 GMT (UK) »
My Great Grandfather Henry Francis Winney emgirated to Canada in 1912, he left behind my Grandmother in England. I have Harry's attestation papers from WW1 which he thankfully survived, he signed them in Winnipeg.

The only other thing we know about Harry is that he died in Toronto in 1940. This we know from a letter from the Red Cross as Grandma tried to trace her father after WW2. I am trying to discover if Harry made a new family in Canada so would be very grateful if someone kind could look up, or let me know how to look up online the obits from Toronto in 1940. (I live in England so cannot get to any libraries in Toronto.)

Many Thanks Vicky.

I checked the Globe & Mail online and did not find an obit in this Toronto paper.

Hi Linda

Thank you for looking at this paper for me. Are there any other papers in the Toronto area which I could perhaps search online?

Thanks again, Vicky.

Hello Vicky

I searched the G & M via my library subscription to the database. There is the Toronto Star http://pagesofthepast.ca/
I do not have access to this one.

Hi Vicky,

I could not find an obit on the Toronto Star Pages of The Past site.

I did, however, find Harry Winney listed on a manifest of people entering the United States from Canada.  He was single when he crossed in Aug 1917, heading for Fargo, North Dakota, from Winnipeg.

He is listed again crossing in April 1924 from Toronto, heading to Cleveland Ohio.  He lists his next of kin as his wife Agnes.
I found an Agnes Winney crossing a few months earlier in Feb 1924 from Toronto, also heading to Cleveland, Ohio.  She was also born in England.

I checked the Ontario Marriage records but didn't find anything for him.

Hope this helps.

Lesley

Vicky

There is also the Toronto Telegram, however, this paper is no longer in existence and only available in print/microfilm as far as I know. Maybe you can borrow the reels via interlibrary loans from the National Library of Canada and your local library.

Hi Lesley and Linda

Thank you for looking both of you.

Linda -  that sounds like him. Not sure if she was his legal wife though Harry put  himself about a bit. I was hoping that if I could find an obit that it would list his family if any in Canada.

Its possible the Red Cross got it wrong and he died in Winnipeg as he seems to have been there are well - sorry for being ignorant but is Winnipeg that far from Toronto?

Many Thanks Vicky.
