In the 1841 census he is down as born in 1816, but in the 1861 he is

He married Sarah Hughes in 1831 in Hayes

Hello, John,

The PRs for Cowley do not apprear to have been transcribed for the IGI so it does mean a physical search of the PRs at the London Metropolitan Archives.

The church at Cowley is St Laurence, in Church Rd., Cowley, the PRs cover C 1562-1449,  M  1563-1947, B 1562-1938  the ref no DRO 33.     They are either on film, transcripts or origanal hard copy.  I believe DRO is for hard copy so this has to be ordered up from the Archives, this is done from the main room at the LMA & then read in the Reading room.  If they have been filmed, the films are available in the main room, together with the filmreaders.

Hope this helps,

Meliora

Hello John

I was at the 'newly refurbished' LMA last week and it wasn't a pleasant experience, they are still doing building work, there was a queue of people was fiche/film readers and you have to book a place for the temporary reading room which was fully booked!

I am on a course there weekly until March so will have a look for you when I can but it may be a couple of weeks for the rooms to get back to normal.

Hi John

I had a look at the actual Cowley Baptism register for 1813-1833 as the left hand pages of the film copy weren't legible and the film copy 1810-1812.

Regrettably I couldn't find a baptism for William Goodall but there is only one Goodall family there and I found 8 other children born to James & Mary Goodall, Brickmaker, of Cowley between 1814 and 1828. I have the deatils if you want them, please let me know. It is possible that William was baptised as something else and took the name William in later life.  :-\

And the ages in the 1841 for people over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 so he could have been born around 1812

In your original post you mention a marriage to Sarah Hughes in 1831. Where does this info come from?

I'm happy to go again and do another look-up for you and check out a marriage.

Hi John

Do you have the date and place details for the 1831 marriage?

As it's pre 1837 registration, it won't contains the fathers' names as such. They may have acted as witnesses but their title won't be mentioned.

I'll have a look at the registers for Hillingdon & Uxbridge to see if there are any possible Goodall families there.

Re: GOODALL Cowley, Middlesex 1810s but where before?
« Reply #8 on: Wednesday 02 October 19 14:06 BST (UK) »
Ah, the old days

Today, it's a trivial task to find that William was baptised 1812 in Hillingdon to James & Mary (Campbell, widow nee ???) , who married in Harlington.

But what of that father James Goodall, my 3GG?

We find he was buried at Cowley in 1828, not having made it to a useful Census, aged 56 ( so b about 1772) and, not seeing a suitable Middlesex baptism on Ancestry, fear that he migrated from one of the surrounding counties of Berks or Bucks whose online presence is sparse to say the least.

Now, Ancestry has thrown up a hint of a baptism in 1771 in Datchet, Bucks which looks like worth following up but, before heading off in the direction of Aylesbury and Kew, wondered if anyone had ploughed this furrow before - maybe even Tree Hunter, though he hasn't been around since 2009
