New family history
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 03:39 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for descendants of John & Ellen New (Police Pensioner from London) who lived at Newbury.   They had son Charles b. 1854 (migrated to Australia), Edmund b. 1856 m. Emily, Rosa Ann b. 1862 m. (1) Moss (2) Hancock, Ellen b. 1863 m. Nightingale, John b. 1865 m. Fanny Keturah (migrated to Australia) Jane b. 1891 m. Hancock, Elizabeth b. 1870 m. Newport, Walter b. 1873 m. Rosina, Daniel b. 1876 m. Beatrice Lewis (Migrated to Australia)

Was wondering if there were any of the above New descendants living in Newbury still.    Edmund owned Two Brewers Inn, and had son Edmund Walter New.

Edmund owned Two Brewers Inn.

I doubt it - almost certainly owned by South Berks Brewery - it was virtually at their front gate. By the time he would have become licensee most Newbury pubs were tied to breweries. Simonds closed it in 1955 - so they could use its license elsewhere.

Thanks for your reply Newbury chap.    I assume you are saying that you doubt there are any descendants of John & Ellen New still living in Newbury, when you say "I doubt it", or did you mean the Two Brewers Inn.

I have checked census records, and it shows that Edmund & Emily New were living at Two Brewers Inn in 1891 and also 1901.

I mean that I doubt that he 'owned' the pub - very few landlords actually owned their pubs which were usually owned by a brewery.

Hi Newbury Chap,

Yes, I realised that, Edmund was only the Licensee of the Inn.
