Dunedin Births.

I am in the process of unravelling somewhat of a mystery relating to a WW1 medical discharge document.
Richard Rangi Lloyd Davies was discharged on 5th Dec 1918 as having a heart condition "Date of origin of disability   Since birth.
                 Place of origin of disability  Dunedin New Zealand"
Can anybody give me some advice as to how I might confirm the date and location of this birth was was given as 1893.

Hi Bill,

Richard Rangi Lloyd DAVIES' Attestation-Sheet completed on joining the NZ Army should have his date of birth, but confirm it by looking at the RGO Birth Indexes on microfiche. This will tell you what quarter of the year he was born and what district the event was registered. Then you can purchase his birth certificate from NZ Dept of Internal Affairs.

I can check the Birth indexes for you next time I go in to National Library.

I should have mentioned that Richard Rangi was called up in Royal Welch Fusileers at Cardiff, South Wales 9/1/1918.
However date of his enlistment was 2/3/1916 (afb 25/3)?
It would appear that he was in the UK at this time.

I have checked the NZ RGO Birth Indexes from 1891-1894 inclusive but cannot find any record of the birth of a
Richard Rangi Lloyd DAVIES.

What was the source for his place and date of birth? Have you eliminiated Wales as his birthplace, for instance?

Info obtained from his discharge papers. It could well be 1895.
I have posted further info.
Father John Morgan Lloyd Davies b.29/5/1856 who was a Physician & Surgeon, Pitt Street, Dunedin 1880/1890 married a daughter of Robert McLaren of Dunedin in 1877 and had three sons and one daughter.

I have been trawling through the NZ.gov pages and have discovered that the name of John Morgan Lloyd Davies appears in the Dunedin probate and Letters of Administration files for both 1928 & 1948. Can anybody advise me how I can go about finding out details contained in the files. It is rather a long way to travel from the UK to comply with the Regional Offices comments "Record must be ordered & viewed in this office"

You can order probate records etc by email. Try the NZ Archives search site Archway http://archway.archives.govt.nz/
Do simple search under name - click 'more' and this will give you the relevant record number and the email address to enquire about ordering copies.

I ordered a copy by email recently - just sent the details through, got an email reply that day, sent them my credit card details (you can do this by fax if you prefer rather than email) and Bob's your auntie's husband - as they say

I'm going to be at the Auckland library tomorrow morning - so will have a look and see what I can find in the birth records (unless you've got there first riley?)

John M. Lloyd Davies, M.R.C.S., second son of Thomas Davies, Esq, Bank House, Cardigan, Wales, to Jessie Maud, third daughter of Robert McLaren, Esq, Queen Street, Dunedin.

Going back, in 1881 Thomas Davies, 57, b. Cardigan, Alderman J. P. Merchant, is living at Bank House with wife Mary, 56, b. St. Dogmells, Pembrokeshire, and a daughter Fanny M, 22, b. Cardigan.

John is with this family in 1861 in Cardigan - I can transcribe that census for you if you'd like.
