Do you have the marriage of  Henry James and Elizabeth Hamilton  ??? it should be circa the first childs birth in 1862.

That would give you the parents.

Unfortunately, I do not have their marriage. I only know her last name from oral history from my g-grandmother and the will of Benj. George Spong who acknowledged taking his mother name of Hamilton when he joined the army.

Patrish,

You ARE good! Thanks so much for that little jewel. I obviously need to become more adept at this whole thing. I have mostly used available census info and not delved into BMD indexes which is where I presume you were able to find this info.

Thanks again.

1861 Census   RG9/345/152/25

3 Gloster Road, Newington Surrey.

Henry Spong Lodger m 28 Coach Driver b Camberwell, Surrey
Elizabeth wife 22 b Camberwell, Surrey.

You really need to start with marriage certificates or births to ascertain the father to make sure you have the correct family.

Yes I used the free BMD and found Henry but there was no Elizabeth on the page so I cross referenced the entry number with the complete index for Elizabeth Hamilton and bingo... it matched.
