Missing family from Staplehurst
« on: Wednesday 30 January 08 00:18 GMT (UK) »
I cant find this family anywhere on the 1841 Census.

They were from Staplehurst in Kent but in 1851 the widowed father was living in Bethnal Green with 2 of his sons.   Thomas b 1819 and Daniel b 1836 H0107/1539/315/38.

Thomas Spong b 1797 Staplehurst, Kent
Ann wife b 1798 Staplehurst, Kent.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Patrish.

The 1851 census says son Daniel age 15 b.Walworth Middlesex - Walworth was in Surrey (Southwark area very near to Camberwell).  In that 1841 entry, I would say that children Mary, George & Daniel fit very well as would a retired person (retired policeman 1851) being listed as independant ;)

Yes , apologies Frances :(  and thanks Casa   ;) for pointing that out to me,  more haste less speed me thinks  ::)

After some further searching this morning it does look as if they left  Staplehurst. before 1841

Previous 4 children were all born in Staplehurst. 1819 - 1827 they include a Mary and a George.

I now have the births of an Elizabeth Martha 1829 St Peters Walworth, Maria b 1832 Daniel b 1835 and Emily b 1838.

The parents are my 3 x gt grandparents .

The Walworth area is where my 2 x gt  was born so it would fit.

Patrish.  ;)

I don't yet have the parents on Henry J Spong but I recently saw some information for a Henry J. Sponge on the 1841 census and this looks promising. If that turns out to be correct then th Spongs  were Sponges.

I hope to hear from others who may have found similarities.

I believe Henry J Spong and the Sponges (previously mentioned) were all from Camberwell, Surrey area.

Be very careful about the surname, the census's are notorious for wrong information, especially surnames, they were often just  written as they were heard by the enumerator.

So far I have found no mis-spelllings in my Spongs who originated from Staplehurst  in Kent.
