RND Casualties 1914-1918 now on-line

The RND was a unique formation in WWI, raised by the Admiralty to serve in their then traditional role as Infantrymen fighting ‘shoulder to shoulder’ alongside their Army comrades in an emergency. The RND originally consisted of three Infantry Brigades (two Naval and one Royal Marine) of twelve Battalions (eight Naval and four Royal Marine). As the war progressed, casualties and a lack of recruits forced the RND to steadily reduce their Naval personnel establishment. Two Naval Battalions were disbanded in June 1915; the Royal Marine Brigade and two Royal Marine Battalions were disbanded in August 1915. Two more Naval Battalions were disbanded in February 1918 and one Royal Marine Battalion in April 1918. At the war’s end the RND’s Naval strength maintained only two Brigades of five Battalions (four Naval and one Royal Marine Battalion). The Army supplied the shortfall in Battalions & Brigades to the establishment of the Division from July 1916 onwards.

Has anyone had a look at the RNVR Records?

I'd be interested as my late father was in the RNVR during WW1...but would like to know whats available before signing up to Ancestry again!

He was: Evan Douglas Wilson (born Swansea 27/5/1896, - died London 29/6/1957).

He was in The Merchant Navy from 1911 - 1916 & then RNVR from 1916 - 1919. (Midshipman in 1916, - invalided out as a Sub-Lieutenant).

As i said before i dont know if this a complete list of names. In my experiance with Ancestry, they appear to do the names in batches, as they did with the List of Pensions and as they are now doing with the Service Records.

The records of the men who served in the Royal Naval Division 1916-1919 are on DocumentsOnline, where it will cost £3.50 to download each one. There is quite a lot of useful background information and document examples on the site:

The records themselves are cards, but contain quite a lot of information

I'm surprised that mt father isn't listed then...as he was RNR, or RNVR...(?)
