Edwin forgan Grant
« on: Sunday 03 February 08 12:39 GMT (UK) »
My friend has asked me to find out a little more about her father.

He died one month before she was born, in December 1941.  She explained his plane went down in the English Channel.  He was a Seargent Observer.

She cannot remember what happened to his medals.

He was born Edwin Forgan Grant, in Edinburgh, between 1912 and 1920 (we believe).  His wife was Jean Marie Sutherland and they probably married in the 1930s.

He had a brother Ian.

I have had a look on Ancestry and Free BMD for her, but cannot get anywhere and wondered if anyone could kindly offer any more information.

Thank you!

Hi Neil, that's great.  It even gives his parents.  My friend knew nothing about her father, now she has no excuse to get going with her family tree.  Thank you once again.

An absolutely brilliant forum!

Thanks a bunch!

Hi,

You can also try a post for more info on his RAF career at:

http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/index.php?referrerid=127

A chap called John Larder is very interested in BoB pilots etc. You will no doubt find that someone cangive you a little more information on his career.
It is probably worth while contacting the Battle of Britain Historical Society. They can be found with a Google search and they also have a forum that you can post a request for help on.
You may find that someone knows who might have the medals if they were ever sent or applied for (I believe that replacements can be obtained from the RAF as I'm sure my Uncle asked for replacements for his which were stolen, I think it might cost though). My mother was engaged to a BoB pilot who was subsequently KIA in Malta in 1942. I found that his medals are now in the hands of a private collector.
Anyway, best of luck finding more info.

Regards,

Ann

Hi Ann,

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I've taken your advice and I'm looking forward to any replies on the BOB forum.

Thanks for the tip!

Helen.

Hi,

You might geta quicker response from the RAF Commands site which is not specifically BoB.
Anyway, you reminded me that I hadn't looked at that site for a while and I saw that a BoB pilot, Cyril Bamberger had died this last weekend. He was a lovely man who was very helpful with a query I had regarding my mother's fiance who had been a BoB pilot and was then subsequently KIA in Malta in 1942.Bam was also kind enough to help my then 10 year old son with writing a letter outlining his WW2 experiences. They don't make them like that any more!

Regards,

Ann
