Hi Dave,

I have found Archdeacon is a Norman surname. It appeared in Counties Clare, Cork and Kilkenny during the period of Griffiths Valuation of Ireland 1848-64. Do you have any other information other than his name, date of birth and the place where he was born? I presume you have been tracing back and you are staring this brick wall in the face.

I searched ALL at http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php n and found the name Archdeacon in Cork and Kilkenny now all we have to do is find your John in Dublin. It is easy to say that but it may be a difficult search.

Regards, Chris

Hi Chris

Thanks for the reply, John Archdeacon joined the British army 5th Dragoon guards, Royal Barracks, Dublin in 1814 at the age of 18, on enlisting he was a Cotton weaver. He was born  abt 1797 in the parish of St Patrick, Dublin. John left the army in April 1834 and married in Hindley, Lancashire August 1834.

Any more help would be appreciated.

Thanks David

Hiya David,

Your message last January mentioned John was born in 1801. It now looks as though you have some more positive information ie born about 1797 and a specific parish in Dublin as well as the date he left the army and the date of his marriage.

The parish where he was born should help. Being a cotton weaver, I do not know if that will help. What branch of the christian faith did the Archdeacon family follow? Do any Christian names appear regularly in the family tree? If there is one that looks like a surname that may point to his mother's surname.

All the Best, Christopher

Hi Chris

John's marriage is mentioned on the igi he married a Catherine Kelly (born Wigan) in Hindley 1834. (Parish Church)

They had 8 children:

Ellen, Jane, Mary, Catherine, Henry, John, Eliza & James.

Catherine my Great G, G grandmother was christened in Wigan St. John's R.C. IN 1839.
Catherine married in 1857 the parish of St George Wigan.
So the faith is a bit mixed up.

On the Dublin Surname & Trades 1738 iv'e noticed a Joseph Archdeacon, Church street. Is this the grandfather of John?

Cheers  David

Hello David,

Eight children is a fairly good indication that John used to come home at lunchtime instead of taking his piece with him  :D Did all eight children only have one Christian name and no second given name before the surname ???
Most people I know have two names although my mother had three and a couple of my cousins have three.

All the Best,

Christopher
