Royal Engineers in India WWII
« on: Monday 04 February 08 08:00 GMT (UK) »
I had an uncle, now deceased who served his whole wartime service to the best of my knowledge in India. I have a number of his letters in my possesion some of which were written to me, apart from his number and the postal address of his Unit it gives absolutely no information as to what he was doing there. He was I understand either a draftsmen or surveyor so assume he may well have been involved in map making for the Burma campaign.

I have to date made fruitless inquiries through the ex RE organisation, either read myself or had others refer to books on the RE with no luck. I unfortunately got sidetracked (as one does) through a book on the NZ Royal Engineers and their part in building and running the railway system in the Middle East namely on the Desert campaigns and in the Eastern Mediterranean countries such as Palestine etc.

If anyone has info on this area I can supply a list of the bases that he served

Regard.

Thanks for that link I have made a note of it and will refer back when I get his letters out again, it could be of use.  At the moment I am suffering from information overload as I have had so much stuff come in.

My ex sis in law is a big shot in the Engineers....Perhaps you could post some of the int here and I will pass it on to her...

Also I seem to remember that there is an ex Sapper or two lurking on Rootschat...Maybe they will pick this post up.

You never know...If you post some of the addresses we may be able to sort it!!!

It's me thats staggering at the moment, I have been around for a while as you will note but I'm afraid my motivation to research runs hot and cold, however having just clicked over birthday # 70 I felt the urge to get enthusiastic once more before it is to late. Not sure that any one else in the family has the time or desire to follow on from were I leave off. Although I am sure it will come in later years, at that time things will no doubt be easier for them with the advance in technology and the availability of census and other records.
