BRAGG family tree
« on: Tuesday 05 February 08 15:12 GMT (UK) »
Here is a link to the Bragg Harrigan Family Tree.  The Braggs came to Nova Scotia in the very early 1800s from England (West Yorkshire) and the Harrigans from Ireland to Ontario in the 1830s.  I am particularly looking for information on these families before they came to Canada.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Karen,

Family history has a John Bragg born in 1810 in the area of Featherstone, Ackton, Pontrefact area. John Emigrated to Nova Scotia before 1838.  My questions are many:  Was John, in fact, from Yorkshire?  Who were his family?  Why did he emigrate?  What was his occupation?  I have a great deal of information about the family in Canada and would be happy to share information with anyone connected.  I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - where are you?

Census records or death certificate might show where John was born and list his occupation. Other possibilities are local histories from the area in Nova Scotia where he settled. Much was written and published about the origins of many of the early settlers. PANS might also have information in their collection from old documents or previous research carried out. Also check under the county on GenWeb to see what sources might be available.

If John Bragg was born in England in 1810 he'd be a bit young to be UEL.

There is a researcher named here, who answered a query regarding a daughter of the couple John Bragg & Jane Rogers...
http://www.ccgs.ednet.ns.ca/notes.htm#BRAGG1
I wouldn't post a query as your email address goes on live and you'd be spammed forever! but copy the researchers name and write to the address here to see if they have anything more on his birth origin...or if the marriage   records in 1838 had any detail on parents.

Here is the main Cumberland site address as well...

The early first settlers from Yorkshire to River Philip

I'd suggest a query on a Yorkshire board regarding John..Only 2 born 1810 show on the IGI...and the same 2 are listed on the 1881 for England...
Mind you...the birth date, if only from the census data... may not be accurate

There is a huge list ( 385) Irish Harrigan names that came through castle gardens...age & occupation are listed...won't help determine origin, but you may find more family that you never knew about once you have a ship name to enter...
http://tinyurl.com/22rmv7

When you put a query on the other boards, make sure there is a direct question with forename as well as surname so that you will get an answer...so that no one has to read your whole web page, nice as it is by the way   ;D   to find out the person you are seeking
There is a board for Ireland...If district is unknown add as a general query with a forename & surname in the subject line...
all the best, J.J.
