British Army Marriage

Hello,
Can anyone tell me how to trace the marriage of a serving soldier about 1845 please?
My 2 X Gt G.Father (George Frost), married an Ellen Jarvis round about that time.
He was a Pte. in the 70th Foot Regt. & I have a birth cert. for their son my G. G.Father (also George) born in November 1845. On it George (snr) is a soldier & she is described as Ellen Frost (formerly Jarvis) so they must have been married at that time but I cannot find a record for the marriage anywhere! Help1

Was George jnr their firstborn child.  Where was he born as there are 4 entries on freebmd for the Dec qtr 1845 and his birthplace may be a clue to their marriage venue

Sorry I should have included that. George(jnr) was born Deansgate, Manchester, Novemebr 1845.
In Jan. of 1846 ther is a marr. recorded at Manchester Cathedral for a William Frost to Ellen Jarvis. However, his 1st name is wrong & if this is a mistranscription why would they say that they were married 2 months before this entry, on George (jnrs) birth cert?

The marriage seems too coincidental to be a different one

He may have been William George or George William - they frequently alternated or dropped christian names in those days

If he was a serving soldier, he may have been serving abroad whilst Ellen was pregnant and that was their first opportunity to marry

I found this 1851 entry - probably not them but here goes

They were lodgers living in Norfolk

George Frost 44 widower vagrant & marine storeman b Suffolk Gt Saxhouse
George Frost Junior 7 - birthplace shown as not known - vagrant

1861 - George jnr was at the Colchester Infantry Barracks aged 17 b Manchester - Army private

I just came across this Googling !! you've been doing this for a couple of years Derek !! 

So what else can you tell us from his service records to save us going over old ground !!

I've traced the birth of the George who was there in 1861 aged 17??. & he was mine PLUS his father was in the 70th Regiment of Foot AND as luck would have it ALL of his pa's attestation & service papers were at the National Archives. So not only have you helped me find my guy I now know what colour his Dad's hair was, the colour of his eyes, his complexion, where he was born, he did 21yrs 7 months in the army. He served in Malta, Gibraltar, Canada, The West Indies, Ireland, & Bengal & he was invalided out in 1854, just in time to miss the Crimean war

As you clearly have so much info about George snr - it may be as well buying a copy of the 1846 marriage cert and comparing details

I was checking the regiment ....... so it looks like they were in Manchester from 1843 until going to Ireland in 1845 !

Have you checked  the Index to Army Chaplains Returns of Births and Marriages and Deaths 1796-1880 ?

With a bit of luck they should be there ! but you said you had found a marriage at the Cathedral .... it maybe a good idea to PM "Howmuch " ( he's usually on the Lancs board ! ) .... he maybe able to look it up for you next time he goes to the records office ! .... then you'd find out one way or the other !

Thanks everyone for info. tips etc. It looks like the best bet is to get the details of the 1846 wedding just to confirm or eliminate it. I've been on this for a lot longer than 2 years it's more like 20!
