Look-up Request in 1911 Census - Winnipeg
« on: Sunday 10 February 08 00:07 GMT (UK) »
Bit of a longshot

Trying to track down any sign of a Sarah Lilley or Lilly (actual surname, but may have used a different surname) in Winnipeg at 1911.   Born Ireland c1880's (possibly 1884). May have arrived in Canada from Scotland.

At 24 of January 1910 she sent a postcard to a relative in America. It was a picture of the YWCA in Winnipeg and it appeared that she was staying/living there at time of writing.

Not sure how the Canadian Census works. Assume if an address such as a YWCA,  that it may be possible to pull up a list of all females there at time of Census (albeit realise Sarah may have moved on by 1911).

As I said, a long shot, but if some kind soul could have a try for me it would be appreciated.

Oh, Oh, found a cool new site because of this...I'll add it to the resources...
Christie Block- built in 1906... apartments, then?
http://apollo.lib.umanitoba.ca/viewBuilding.action?id=232

Look at what a cool resource this is! ( won't help the query, but good for me!)
I just live here, wasn't born here...
http://apollo.lib.umanitoba.ca/browseDates.action?section=1900s

and I'll add this here, just because I won't find it later...but darn..not listed yet!
I'll have to give them any information we may find...

For your consideration. There is a Sarah Lelly? in Regina, Saskatchewan as a lodger born February 1890 age 21 born N.S. (Nova Scotia) race given as Scotch and nationality Canadian. This may be the same one whom Karen found in border crossings as Irish and nearest relative is in Saskatchewan.

Wow, you have both been busy, I will need to take some time to read back through your messages.

Sarah is a bit of a mystery. I didn't know of her existance until recently. Her parents died when the children were quite young. I had been following the travels of two of her brothers from County Antrim to America just after the turn of the century and finally tracked down living descendants of them in America last year. It was then that mention of Sarah came about. Because I had so much research on the brothers, the family assumed I would have known of Sarah too and so when they started talking about Sarah in Canada I was at a loss. She certainly did exist, but no one can remember what her surname may have been and only refer to her by her birth surname. I have found a possible match for her on the 1901 Scottish Census and thought she may have gone to Canada from there. Certainly she visited her family in America on occasions as they have old photos in which she is present, as well as the 1910 postcard from Winnipeg.

We might never track down Sarah, but I love a challenge and who knows....maybe one day.

Off to read your various posts...thanks again for all your interest.
