Hollingdale or Hollingbury?
« on: Sunday 10 February 08 14:34 GMT (UK) »
My Grandmother's cousin (John Edward Hay born London 1893) was the Mayor of Brighton in 1953 and his son (John Albert Hay) a prominent Tory politician.  There is some confusion however, for the birth record of the latter in 1920 (Brighton) gives his mother May's maiden name as Hollingdale, whilst his obitury has it as May Hollingbury.

I cannot find the parents' marriage on FreeBMD (probably a Steyning one that has yet to appear in the indexes) so has anyone access to another source that could help determine whether his mother was a May Hollingdale or Hollingbury?

Thanks Kerry
The Wickipedia Obitury is therefore wrong.
I'll see if I can at least get their Internet record corrected.

I'm pretty sure you can edit wikipedia pages or at least send amendments Roy.  The pages are all submitted by users anyway, so sadly probably full of all sorts of errors  ::) ::)

Amended.

Now have to see if this sparks any interest for someone with Hay family ties to help me back beyond his Scottish great grandpfather.
John Albert Hay Born Brighton 1919
John Edward Hay Born London 1893
John William Hay Born Southsea 1870
John Erskine Hay Born somewhere in Scotland c1845.
Arthur Hay
Unfortunately much outside the remit of the, "oh so helpful" Sussex Rootschatters.
