GRIGGS of Wickhambreaux & Sandwich

Hello everyone,

I am looking for the marriage of William GRIGGS to Mary ?
Their first child Sarah was born in Wickhambreaux about 1816, so the marriage would possibly be shortly before this.
According to the 1851 census William's wife Mary was born in Littlebourne (about 1789), & he was born in Sandwich (about 1788). He was a Master Blacksmith.
Hopefully they were married in Wickhambreaux.

Hi Jenny, welcome to Rootschat

I can't help with Wickhambreaux, but as Mary was born in Littlebourne, the marriage was most likely to have taken place there.

I've found this Marriage in Littlebourne:

William GRIGGS of St Alphege, Canterbury
Mary BROWNING of this Parish
25th Feb 1811  By Banns
Witness: John TRICE
Although it says William was of Canterbury, that doesn't necessarily mean he was born there, just living there at the time of the marriage

There are a lot of BROWNING Baptisms in Littlebourne.
This could be Mary, the only child of that name c1789
17th Oct 1790
Mary  Daughter of Thomas & Mary BROWNING

thanks for the welcome! 

I think you've hit gold for me with that marriage!
I had an OPC look in Whickhambreaux & she replied today that there was nothing.
So Littlebourne it will be. The bride's town - of course! 
I need to get into the habit of putting my feet in their shoes when thinking of events!
I'll chase up the certs for that one.

Hi Jenny,

This may be your William Griggs christening from the Bishop's Transcript for Sandwich, St. Mary:
GRIGGS, William on 08 Mar 1789 to James and Mary, child was born on 15 Feb 1789

There is no marriage for James and Mary in that parish but there is a burial for Mary wife of James Griggs on 16 Feb 1794 aged 33 years.

Sorry, I don't seem to have any other information that would be helpful.

That particular James was also a Blacksmith, as were all of William's sons.
Sandwich is the thing also that is 'Sandwiching' this line together for me! 

So that certainly looks good!

I am new to this site but I homed in on this message as I think you may have the wrong William.
He is my gtx4grandfather.  He was born in Sandwich 1789, married Mary Browning (b. Littlebourne) in Littlebourne and lived in Wickhambreaux.  He was indeed a master blacksmith in Littlebourne/Wickhambreaux, son of James and Mary of Sandwich.  But he had no daughter Sarah.  He had 6 children, William, Mary, James, George, Clement and Ann.  All the sons were blacksmiths too. If I can help further please get in touch, I have been researching this family for some years now, and any new information would be most welcome.

Hello Gini, WOW! This is exciting! I have been hoping to find another Griggs descendant. Here is what I have on that Griggs family -

My information has come from a chap in Kent (he is also trying to verify all the info in a book written by Fred Griggs in 1986) - he is sure he has now sorted out the William Griggs issue - your William with that same wife & children are ours too;
& this also verifies info I received from a chap when he travelled from Australia to Kent to research Sarah's parents.
I have Sarah as being your William & Mary's daughter - she is their eldest born sometime between 1811 & 1816.  She married Stephen CASTLE in 1838 & appears on the 1841 census as Sarah CASTLE - on the same page as the Griggs &, by the looks of it, living 5 houses down from her family. Sarah is often not linked to the Griggs as in the first available census (1841) she is already married & has moved out of home. She & her husband Stephen came to Australia in 1841, therefore she doesn't appear on the 1851 census.

I'd love to know what you make of all this!

I think I am the chap you were refering to investigating the Griggs family in Kent. William and Mary do appear to have had a daughter called Sarah. There is a baptism at Stodmarsh Kent on 10th November 1816 of a Sarah Griggs to a William and Mary. This fits in well between baptisms of Thomas in 1815 at Littleborne at Emma 1819 at Wickhambreuax.

Because Sarah married in 1838 (before the first census of 1841) she would not have appeared in any censuses with her family. If you would like any more information please contact me or take a look on my (incomplete) website www.tonygriggs.btinternet.co.uk

I really really hope some of you are still out there and researching this family, You have just added sooo much information to our family. Thank you.
Our line comes down through Emma, sister of Sarah etc daughter of William and Mary.
Emma married Thomas Maxted, on 20th Oct 1838,Sandwich. Thomas was born 1809 son of Richard and May or Mary Maxted. Thomas, you will be surprised to know, was a Blacksmith!
Thomas had a brother Robert and on Roberts Death Cert. his mother - May/Mary's maiden name is Haffau but we can find no trace of this name. So wonder if the spelling is wrong.
 Thomas and Emma, along with their oldest 6 children, travelled to New Zealand, on board the 'Cresswell' in 1856.
Emma gave birth on board to my great grand father, Tristan da Cuhna Cresswell Maxted.
Thomas continued his trade in Blenheim, Marlborough, New Zealand.
Emma died in Feb 1905
