Thomas Matson the Convict
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 14:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello -
I'm trying to find more about Thomas Matson who was one of the first to be deported to Australia.
Thomas was a 27 year old labourer. He was tried on the 13th July 1785 at Maidstone, Kent for robbery of a lead pump valued at 40 shillings, and was transported for 7 years. He is travelled on "The Alexander' which was one of the first ships to take convicts to Australia.
His partner in the original crime was 35 year old James McDonaugh, also a labourer, who received the same sentence. On 26 September 1788 McDonaugh was sentenced to receive 200 lashes and to wear an iron collar for 6 months for theft of clothing. James is believed to have died in 1791.
I am building a record of the Matson family of East Kent and would love to find out where our convict fits in to my records.
Any help or further information about Thomas Matson or perhaps James Mc Donaugh would be much appreciated.
