John WATTsnr & jr & Janet BURNS
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 20:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

John Watt snr lived in Muirhead, Stewarton, Ayrshire. He had at least 2 children John & Robert.  John snr died in 1810.

Robert compiled the monumental bibliography Bibliotheca Britannica and was President of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He was born in May 1774 and died on 12 March 1819 and is buried in Glasgow High Church Burial Ground.

John jnr married his neighbour's daughter Janet Burns on 16 August 1794 and had at least one child named Marion Watt.  She was born on 17 May 1795 in Stewarton, married in 1819 and sailed to New Zealand and died here on 29 May 1890.

If anyone can tell me about the Watt family in Stewarton or the Burns I'd be most grateful!

Hello Kiwi Girl,

According to the IGI- a search from 1790 to 1830 brings up 5 children (all girls), for John Watt and Janet Burns - all born in Stewarton, Ayr, Scotland.

1.  Marrion Watt ch. 17 May 1795
2.  Janet Watt ch. 08 June 1800
3.  Janet Watt  ch.  17 Jan 1802
4.  Mary Watt  ch.  07 June 1806
5.  Margaret Watt  ch.  22 Jan 1809.

Robert Watts details can be found online - have included a Wikepedia link which gives its sources.

Also another link - which towards the end says that Dr Watt - married Miss Burns and had 9 children.  However - can't find any hint ofthis on the IGI - perhaps others can put their oar in.  Got to go now.

Regards,   Steve   :O)

Could be one of those parishes which didn't record male births. Wish someone could tell me why ::)

Hello Blanched

Unless I read the electric scotland link wrong, the Dr Burns was Robert - so it seems that someone got the brothers mixed up.  As there seems to be quite a bit about Robert online - I didnt bother searching for his family, but did do a search for him and Janet Burns and the IGI came up with nothing, so it seems that it definitely was John she was married to    :O)  Regards,   Steve
A mystery as you say about some recording - but at least this family seems to have been - maybe more to look for?

My great grandmother was Elizabeth Watt brn about 1866 (father named John Watt) and married to William Young, in Paisley 1888 , then moved to Kilmarnock and came to USA around 1907. Does this mean anything to you?
