1861/1871 Census - Henry ROSSITER

Hi,

I am doing a one name study of the Rossiter family and am looking for information please about the parents and siblings of Henry Rossiter born circa 1869 in Chippenham.

I found him here in the 1881 Census:-

but unfortunately he is not living at home.

couldn't find him yet in 1871 but here he is in 1891 with the same people but as their son:

Sophia 63 yrs b Ranworth Norfolk
Henry son 21 yrs farmer's son b Chippenham Wilts

Henry Rosseter 39 yrs
Sophia 43 yrs

with them is Henry Edwards 1 yrs nephew born Chippenham Wiltshire

plus a couple of lodgers and a few servants- they are lodging house keepers

Many thanks for that.

It's somewhat confusing. I wonder how he could be marked as nephew in 1881 and be their son in 1891.

I wonder if his parents died and he was adopted by Henry & Sophia as the nearest relatives.

The 1871 Census is going to be interesting.

BTW, can you find a marriage record for Henry & Sophia please?

I've posted the 1871 above where he appears to be Henry Edwards - it must have crossed in posting.
Can't find a marriage on Free BMD but this is interesting:

Henry Rossiter unm 28 yrs butler n Newton Devon
Sophia Skinner unm  32 yrs lady's maid b Banworth Norfolk

appears to be them - so young Henry remains a bit of a mystery

Free BMD has a birth for Henry Edward Skinner 1869 Chippenham so that solves the mystery - he's not yours!

Hi Heywood,

Many thanks for that. I searched FreeBMD but could not find a suitable marriage to fit the dates.

Henry the father was the son of Robert Rossiter & Ann Langmead. He was one of 11 children.

I suspect that possibly one of his two sisters ( Charlotte or Susan Ann) married or had a liasson with a  Mr Edwards.

Perhaps she or they died and young Henry Edwards was adopted by Henry & Sophia.

Another possibility is that Sophia was married previously.
