Irish Social History Books.
« on: Thursday 21 February 08 15:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I would love to have recomended any Irish Social History books, particularly for the west of Ireland after the potato famine.
It seems my G G Grandfather was a possible COfI convert. I do have some evidence to suggest that this is a possibility. On the death cert. of this relative it suggests he had lived at Castlekerke. I have googled the place and have found it quite interesting, especially as it was the first mission in the West of Ireland.
I want to learn more about life at that time and more about the reasons they converted (possibly starvation!) and the effects on there families.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful.

Hello Jacqui,

I haven't read the book but "Priest, Politics and Society in Post-Famine Ireland" by James O'Shea Published by Wolfhound might interest you.

The writeup about the book says "It is only in recent years that a detailed examination of the power and influence of the Catholic clergy in Ireland has been forthcoming. This book is a scholarly examination of the reality of that power in the second half of the 19th century. The material used in this book has been drawn from all parts of Ireland and provides an important, highly readable and intriguing study of Irish history."

Jacqui:
An invaluable resouce is the Google Book search. I have found it most useful and quite addictive. I am sure if you "play" with it you will be able to find what you need.

Good luck,

Thank you christopher and Pat,

I had never heard of the Google book search before. Now I have discovered it I will certainly be using it.
I think I will have a good search now.
