Patrick BRENNAN - Whitewell?
« on: Friday 22 February 08 00:58 GMT (UK) »
My g-g-grandfather Patrick BRENNAN died in NZ in 1887 - according to his death certificate he was born in Whitewell (?), Ireland  c. 1815.  He married Margaret MCCARTHY in Cloyne 1844. Known children (those alive at his death) Julia born c. 1858, Albina c. 1860 (born in Cloyne?) and John in NZ c. 1867. The family arrived in New Zealand (from London) in 1864.

Margaret's sister Fanny HANNING (nee MCCARTHY) was also in New Zealand, and was a hotel keeper in Oamaru in the South Island.

I am fairly new to Ireland research and would greatly appreciate any help in where to find the following?

Where is Whitewell? Is it near Cloyne?
Where is the best place (if there is one!) to find more information about his marriage to Margaret? Or any other children they had?
There seems a large gap between the marriage and the birth of Julia in 1858 - what happened during that time?

Although NZ death records hold a great deal of information, by the time Patrick died in 1887, his wife Margaret only put his birthplace on the record - his parents are listed as unknown.

Any leads gratefuly received :)

There is a Cloyne situated 3+km from Whitewell in Co Cork.

Thank you so much Kamilla - I had tried various maps but you have hit the nail on the head straight away!  Looks like Patrick was a Cork boy after all:)

I don't know where Colyne is - there is a place to the North of Belfast called Whitewell - you can probably see it now as the Whitewell Road - its leads to the Antrim Road and the top end is near Belfast Zoo.  This area would've been called the Whitewell - maybe there are other possibilties thoughh too.
