william Robertson, feuar???

I have a copy of The Cupar deeds 1778 -1802 which says
Robertson, William, feuar ???of Streetford: 23 yr tack of land of Pittencrieff from Alexander Low of Leadennurquhart. tackman of said lands [cautioner Robert Robertson, musician of Dundee]23/3/1786.
I undertand that William is leasing land from Alexander low for 23 years and his brother Robert is guarantor, but where are these places? i cant find any of them on my map.
Would William be living in Streetford [wherever that is] and working land in Pittencrieff? Can someone explain feuar?
William is a previously unknown relative, as I had no siblings for Robert. Is there anyway of tracing william from this info?

Hi Wozzle. Thanks for your help. am I right in assuming that William in the military at some point? His brother Robert, mentioned in the deed as his guarantor, fought at Culloden with the Jacobites.

Pittencrieff is a farm about a mile due north of Cupar, but I don't know of any "Leadenurquhart" or "Streetford".

Don't want to send you off on a wild goose chase, but another Pittencrieff lies just west of Dunfermline, with Urquhart adjoining to the west. Haven't come across the prefix "Leaden" however.

If your man fought with the Jacobites at Culloden he wouldn't have been very popular in Dunfermline. Prince Charlie's men arrived there in 1745 and demanded all the town funds - immediately - or they'd plunder the town. They were paid off. A nice little protection racket!

Hi henry. Thanks for your help. I think Cupar sounds more likely. Williams nephews family were there. Williams brother Robert stole a lot of stuff from the English soldiers during Culloden. He hid in the woods for 9 months and then moved on to Dundee [ A couple of the items ended up here in Australia with his grandson. ]
Ill try the Cupar library. They might be able to help. Cheers

Boy! Did I enjoy that little bit of history about the Jacobite Rebellion! I would love to see more of that kind of thing on the postings, even though, I now live in Victoria, Australia.

If you have gone through my postings, you will see that I lived on Easter Lathrisk Farm between Ladybank and Freuchie with the River Eden as its northern boundary. If I remember correctly, yes, there was a Pittencrieff Farm further along the river heading past Cupar on its way to St Andrews.

Even today, I wish some kind soul would offer me some land either at Pittencrieff or Easter Lathrisk. Now, that's Gods own country. I'll have to stand back and wait for a torrent of abuse from all my neighbours! (Only kidding, folks - only kidding!)

I hope you're sure it was English soldiers that he stole from. It was a British army that defeated B.P. Charlie at Culloden.  There were more Scotsmen in that army than Charlie had on his side.

If he stole General Cope's fiddle it must have been at the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745 not Culloden in 1746. If he was on the Jacobite side at Culloden he would afterwards have been fleeing for his life not looting the possessions of dead British soldiers.  The Jacobite side won at Prestonpans but it is not easy to see how he could be sure that he only looted the possessions of dead English soldiers while ignoring those of Scottish members of the British army.  No particular problem about the looting  - everybody did it in those days and I believe in much later wars.
