Born Bavaria 1833.
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 10:40 GMT (UK) »
I have a Henry D Scott (possibly D = Daman), according to the English Census 1861 onwards he was born in Bavaria 1833 & is noted as a British Subject. He doesn't appear in England in 41 or 51 so possibly still overseas.

Obviously before UK Civil Registration & nothing on IGI, is there any small possibility of any record of his birth?

He married Mary Elizabeth...??? about 1853/4, but no sign of this on the English registrations either.

Also, what would a British family be doing in Bavaria in the 1830s?

Any ideas would be welcome.

At this point I would recommend first getting the birth certificate of one of their children (possibly one of the eldest to make sure that Mary wasn't the second wife).

Origins 1861 has a bad scan, but it looks to me like there's a son John D Scott, aged 17, in 1871 who isn't there in 1861. He may be John Demetrius Scott (from freebmd), who is with two sisters and his grandparents in 1861 (in Louth).

Sister Julia Jane Scott is still with the grandparents in 1871 - surname of grandparents appears to be maybe Nelthorpe (still in Louth).

There is a possible marriage in 1851 in Manchester - Mary Elizabeth Nelthorpe and Henry Scott (freebmd).

Thanks Jorose...... I think you are right & I will check it out later. The Nelthorpe name sounds right..... I am particularly interested in the son Amelius & have sent off for both his birth certificate & death certificate. According to family legend his name was:

Amelius Beauclerk Nelthorpe Francis Henry William John Agustin SCOTT.

What a mouthful.

Did you ever find out whether that was his full name?

Mary Elizabeth Nelthorpe had a brother called Amelius Beauclerc Nelthorpe and another called Augustin Paston Butterfield Nelthorpe.  They were children of a surgeon called John Nelthorpe, from Louth in Lincolnshire.

I appreciate this is an old, old thread but for any coming across it now, Henry D Scott is in Louth, Lincolnshire in 1851 Census with widowed mother Sarah and family - Henry's father given as Henry Scott, Carver and Gilder, when he married 1851 and on 1851 census mother Sarah described as 'Carver and Gilder's widow' - all her children, including Henry, are shown as born in Louth.

In 1841 census Louth, Henry senior and wife Sarah are shown as not born in county but all their children were so looks like Henry D Scott wasn't actually born in Bavaria at all.

Henry Scott senior married Sarah Brigham 6/11/1825 All Saints, Sculcoates, Yorkshire.

Just a thought, Oberammergau, Bavaria is famous for its woodcarving. Was that perhaps the reason that Henry's parents were there. His mother might even be German.

I see Mary Elizabeth Nelthorpe's brother Augustin (jeweller) was boarding with Henry's mother Sarah and Sarah's daughters Sophia and Sarah Anne in West Sculcoates in 1861.

Henry's birth place is listed as Bavaria in each of 1861, 1871 and 1881. As Annette says, it is listed as Louth in 1851.  It seems unlikely that Henry would get that fcat wrong 3 times, unless it is a family legend or self aggrandisement.
I wouldn't put a huge amount of weight on the born in same county? column in 1841. I've often seen cases where the answer was clearly wrong, and those answers don't seem particularly reliable.
