Gilbert De Angulo, circa 1160
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 16:38 GMT (UK) »
The above took part in the Norman invasion of Ireland during the 1100's.  He came from somewhere in Wales.  Has anyone come across him?

From Angle, Pembrokshire, Wales. Their original Tower House is still standing, a national register building . The template for all the castles they built in Ireland. Prior the family came from St Germaine des Angles, in Normandy , France. They Accompanied William the Conquerer on his  invasion of England 1066, and were called “Aristocratic mercenaries “by Historian Edward Curtis.

I have some info re this man , his family started 5 or 6 other clans in Ireland.
My avatar name is the Irish spelling, at least one variation, and  i have assembled info from legal docs etc for an attempt to sort thru the families and associated Irish clans they married into, inclding the ONeils of Clanaboy, The OReillys of East Breffney, The Peppards of Chester and Ardee , The De Lacys of Meath and first Earl of Ulster, a  very famous Family, and the Butlers, Earls of Ormond. Amazing to find their family members in the earliest legal docs and Abbeys rolls. Also , the first 5 brothers to come to Ireland, with their father Gausslyn (Jocelyne ) were in order William d 1208, Gilbert d 1212, Philip d 1230, Richard d 1200 and Walter d 1215. William married Joan Peppard, some of his decsendants used Fitz William as a middle name, he built Atherdee( Ardee) Castle in Louth and his sons rebuilt Trim Castle and were styled Lords of Ardee. Ormond Deeds have over twenty or more grants and references of this family.  More Later
Thanks
