Brighton Workhouse - where is Adam Wingham ?
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 21:46 GMT (UK) »
Adam Wingham was born on 16th March 1852 in Brighton and his father was William Wingham and his mother Lucy ( nee Hiscock) . He was the youngest of 8 children .

In 1861 , I have found his mother Lucy Wingham aged 48, a widow and a pauper living in Brighton Workhouse, but cannot find any record of Adam Wingham aged 9.  His sister Elizabeth Wingham  aged 14 is a boarder in the Industrial school for Orphan Girls in Brighton ( she later emigrated to Australia) . The other siblings are older and working. None of them have Adam with them .

I know Adam survived as in 1871 he was living in London .

Can anyone help in finding Adam?

Thanks  :) :)

Not much help, Bellou, but I've looked for him up & down the 1861 & I can't see him.  I do know that some pages of the 1861 are missing/lost/destroyed including some Brighton areas.  Here's a link that helps identify them...perhaps Adam was in one of these areas  :(  http://www.familyhistory.uk.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=73&Itemid=2

Hi Jane

I  didn't realise pages of the 1861 census are missing  :( :(

From the link you gave me there are  some missing pages in Brighton, Palace which was an area they lived in .  I keep thinking what could have happened to Adam as he was not with his Mother in the workhouse . I know they split up families . Let's hope he was in a school or somewhere in the 'missing' area of census .

Thanks for the information
