Hi
A groom looked after the horses, so perhaps he worked the land for some Manor. or worked for a trainer of sorts.

Hi

One of my gt gt grandfathers was a groom whilst he was in the army and at one time "living out" with one of the higher ranking officers so I assume that he looked after the horse(s) and possibly also rode any horse that pulled his carriage as later, when he left the army, he was still a groom (they lived over the stables) and also drove a local doctor round.

I think the earlier posters have summed up precisely what job a groom did - it is looking after horses by grooming both the animal and its trappings (saddle, bridle, reins, etc) . It should not be overlooked that there were a huge number of grooms around to service all the horses that were in use pre WWI. Most gentry would have had their own grooms and there would have been others to look after working horses.
