53 Vulcan Street, Birkenhead
« on: Tuesday 26 February 08 17:51 GMT (UK) »
I cannot find this street on Streetmap UK.  It may no longer exist.  My great grandparents resided here from 1891 to 1901 (according to census data). Can anyone pinpoint this for me on a map or give me the general area with some references to existing streets today to help?  Any indication as to the type of housing would also help.
Thank you in anticipation.

Hi Kath

As far as I know Vulcan Street is off Laird Street - somewhere before St James church(Laird Street ends at the church).

I think it's still there - not sure whether they're the original houses though.

Try looking on the left hand side of Laird Street going towards St James church (which is on a roundabout).

Hope this helps

Neptune and Wozzle, thanks for your help on this.  I still haven't located Vulcan Street it is not showing on Streetmap.  However the information that Wozzle gave me has shown that someone had taken up residence by 1911.  My great grandfather died in 1898 and his widow was still living at 53 in the 1901 census. I will just have to see if she is still there when we get to see the 1901 (unless I am feeling well off and pay to have the address searched at the National Archives for 1901).
I will keep my fingers crossed that someone can direct me to a map showing Vulcan Street.  I wonder do either of you know if he would have been buried at Flaybrick from this area?
Thanks for your help.  It is much appreciated

Mel and Annie thank you very much for your help.  Mel I have just read your post on Celias look up and replied.  I would appreciate any info on the location of Vulcan Street. Although I was born in Birkenhead I was only there for a couple of years before we moved.  I then spent 7 years there again in the late 60's early 70's and of course at my age then had no interest in the past.  I still have lots of relatives on the Wirral and visit often.
I am indebted to the help that I receive from other Rootschatters.
Regards

Hi Kath,,

did you click on the link? Vulcan Street is next to St James Primary School? Not far from St James Church.
Someone said that the pub is on the corner. If thats correct then the Police Station is on the other corner.

From the names you have given me, I cannot find a connection as yet.
My search of Davies is not yet over. As it appears in many different lines.

Mel

I am asking a family member who lived in Vulcan Street  (1920's to 1950's) to tell me exactly where it is.

Hi  Kath(and everyone)

I would imagine that Flaybrick would be the right cemetery - it's just up the road from Vulcan Street - on Tollemache Road.

The cemetery is now called Flaybrick Memorial Gardens.

I'm pretty sure that Vulcan Street is still there .
