Help please
« on: Tuesday 26 February 08 18:10 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me what regiment this man was in? It looks from his uniform that he was in the cavalry..possibly Dragoons? And about what year might it have been taken? All help gratefully received.

This corporal would appear to have served with the Royal Scots Greys going by his collar dogs and he is also wearing a wound stripe on his left arm above the cuff. As for date I would suggest about 1914/15 going by the hemline on the woman's skirt.

I think I will have to disagree a little there OR! :-[

This chap has a wound stripe, so it has to be post Aug 1916, as they were not sanctioned until that date...

Also I have a feeling that he may be 1st Royal Dragoons....

But the differences between the two collars are are minimal, they are virtually identical! So either of us could be right on that one!!!!  :o :o ;D

thanks for the clarification on the date for the wound stripe coming in Scrim as I was unsure of that, but date wise I was solely going by the drop of the hemline as by the middle war years it had started to rise betwix ankle and knee. As you say, the differences between the two regimental badges are slight in comparision so in that we may not know which he served with.

I'm with Old Rowley on the collar badges.  They sure look like Scots Greys to me.

The 1st Royal Dragoons collar badge has a narrower base - as in the example that Scrim posted.
Reid: Nicol: Peterhead and Aberdeen
McDonald: Greig: Milne: Aberdeenshire
Moreland: Lanarkshire, Whitehaven in Cumbria and Ireland
Cunningham: Lanarkshire, Cumbria and Ireland
Halliday: Falkirk, Stirlingshire and Ireland
Redpath: Stirlingshire and Banbridge

Hi Cato

Would you like to post in the soldier's name, and any other details if you have them.  Perhaps you will find out more about him.  :)

If I could post his details, I surely would but his photo came with a load of others from a slightly dotty aunt. I know he's family but which part thereof is another matter.....sadly. I was sort of hoping that his regiment might help me throw some light on his identity but alas not. However, I do see what you mean about the differing base on the collar dogs. It certainly isn't very noticeable...at least it isn't when you haven't been in the military.
