Robert Warnock, Missing!!
« on: Friday 29 February 08 01:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Trying to find my gt gt gt gt grandad Robert Warnock or Wernock in 1871
Born 1817 in Ireland
1847 living at Durham Place and working as a Master Cabinet maker (from daughter Catherine's birth cert.)
1851 census 36 Mallow Stree Hulme along with wife Margaret and 2 daughters Eliza and Catherine.
1861 living at Whittaker St Hulme
1869 Daughter Catherines marriage and her address is Bruswick St so I guess he may be there also.
1871 (5 Feb) his wife Margaret dies at 26 Poole Street and Catherine's husband (John Joseph Allen)is in attendance and the notifier.  She is recorded as the wife of a master cabinet maker.
1871 John Joseph, Catherine and infant daughter Mary Lilian are still at Poole St but Robert has gone.
He next shows up in the workhouse at Crumpsall in 1881 and dies there in 12 Dec 1889. Right up until his death he is recorded as a Master Cabinet Maker.

Can anyone see him on the 1871 and is anyone else researching this family?
Sorry if that as long winded  ::)Cheers

Hi Jo

When doing research on your family tree, take nothing for granted until you have proof. To quote your post, " 1869 Daughter Catherines marriage and her address is Bruswick St so I guess he may be there also." Do you have her marriage cert, he could be marked as deceased, if you do not have this, try looking for a death.

Sadly I do have her marriage cert and his death/burial notice from Philips Park cemetery age and occupation 'fit' all the way along. I wouldn't mind if I were trying to find him in Ireland..... ;), but thanks for the reminder. We need to think twice and sideways with some of these elusive family members!!

Hi Jo

Given that he was still alive in 1871 (!) which I guess he must have been since you say he died in1889, then I can't find him either in 1871.  I've tried all possible variations Robert, Robt, War*  Wer* etc and I even tried just the initials in case he was in a hospital or such like, but I'm afraid I haven't found him.  He either missed the census or is unrecognisably transcribed.  Is it possible that he went home to Ireland for a while after his wife died?

Sounds like you have reached the same conclusions as I have :(
I don't really think he went back to Ireland but I do feel that his name has been well & truly mangled in the census and or transcriptions thereof. Thanks for taking the time to stagger through the various permutations of his name, he will probaly remain 'hidden' forever. ???

Hi Jo

I have found his grave number (L2432) Robert Warnocks - 77 - Cabinet maker - Poorhouse - Cheetham, so will go see if I can get a photo of the stone.

L section is a paupers burial area and a vast amount of stones are still in place (layed flat), but unfortunately they are buried after years of neglect.

I will give it my best shot at locating it.
