Hi Wozzle and Sofee

There are a couple of possibilities I see for Jessie in 1891 (born Strathy). One is living as a ward (perhaps with grandparents or other relatives)
1891 ED 4 page 4 Strathy West Sutherland
John Mackay 59 head crofter Strathy, Sutherland
Janet Mackay 59 wife Crofter wife Strathy, Sutherland
Christina MacKay 84 BI? formerly dress maker Strathy Sutherland
Jessie Mackay 6 ward dom Scholar Strathy West

The other is listed as Jamesina jessie Mackay, aged 5, parents are George and Alexanderina - not quite a match

Hi Sofee

From your last notes ...they lived in Bettyhill and had the name Bannerman.....

There is this marriage on SP:

1928   BANNERMAN   WILLIAM DONALD   MACKAY   ALEXANDERINA   DORNOCH   /SUTHERLAND   047/00 0008

If I'm correct, Bettyhill is in Sutherland isn't it? So following Jessie's death in 1929, I wonder if this is the sister and husband Bannerman that youngest son went to live with.

From the cert. this Alexenderina shows as single age 49, so born 1879 which looks a good range to be a sister to your Jessie.  Father on the MC shows as William Mackay and mother as Alexenderina Grant sorry MURRAY*, both deceased. Father William shows as landholder. This can often read for farmer, crofter etc.  Also not uncommon in those times and parts, for men to combine their work between fishing and the land.

Regards.

Monica  :)

* Sorry Sofee, slip of the fingers or wishfull thinking on my part  :P

There is this family in 1891 (not sure as yet if it connects with the family above) but interesting given what info you have.  Everyone showing as born in Strathy:

William McKay    55, fisherman
Alexanderina McKay 52
Williamina McKay 18
Hugh McKay 16
John McKay 12
James McKay 10
Janet McKay 8

Address: Strathy Pt:, Farr Sutherland

I'm sure you know this, but just to note that Jessie and Janet are interchangeable in Scotland.

Regards.

Monica  :)
