Oak Cottages, Deal?
« on: Saturday 01 March 08 15:14 GMT (UK) »
Perhaps Bill will know the answer to this :)

I would like to know where Oak Cottages were, please.
The address given on a certificate is 1 Oak Cottages, Middle Deal.
To me, Middle Deal implies the Middle Deal Road area, but I have reason to believe the family lived in Middle Street

Is Middle Deal the old name for Middle Street?

Thanks in anticipation
 :)

Middle Street Deal and Middle Deal Road are seperate places. There is an Oak Street  that comes off Middle Street, but I havent seen Oak Cottages.  I will ask some of my older Rellies to see if they have heard of it.

Hi littlefishlock, welcome to RootsChat :)

I'm familiar with Middle Street, & I know this family lived there, which is why I thought Oak Cottages would be in/near Oak Street.
I know Middle Deal Road is some distance away, & I'm trying to find out which area was known as Middle Deal in the 1880s.

I've no family in the area now who I can ask, so anything you can find out will be welcome.

Hi littlefishlock - welcome to RootsChat - now there's a well known Deal name!

Betty - I'm pretty sure Oak Cottages are in Oak Street, but I will have a look at the weekend when I'm in Deal.  If my memory serves me right, there is just one left, behind the shop at the bottom of the street, just off the High Street.

I've been looking through my collection of photos of Deal to see if I could find it, but no luck so far.

Thank you, Bill.
I think I know the area you mean, is it near the small car park opposite the fish & chip shop (used to be Skardons)?

That's the one, Betty - the chippy still is Skardon's as far as I know.

My memory was playing tricks again!  Must be getting old.  ;D

Oak Cottages are in Middle Deal Road, near the junction with Southwall Road.  There were originally 6 cottages; now only 3 remain (nos. 1-3).  I'm assuming these are the original cottages, as they were certainly here in 1910 - these don't look later than that, but I suppose they could be.

Notice you have Cornwell of Sandwich amongst your surname interests. Do you have Eliza Cornwell b abt 1857 in your family tree?
