another allan problem
« on: Saturday 01 March 08 18:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I know i'm probably getting annoying now with this family but I have a William Allan born 1853 coatbridge, lanarkshire.  His father robert dies in denny in 1885 and his son is living there in 1881 with his wife georgina.  He is a colliery manager (like his father) and his address is Dryburgh, Denny.

Only trouble is i can't find them after this  ???
any one got any ideas pleas?

thanks, caroline xx

Caroline

Possibility that Georgina may have died:

1889   ALLAN   GEORGINA       TAYLOR   F   28   DENNY   /STIRLING   476/01 0019

Age slightly out on her age in 1881, but you know the way of these things. If it is the right entry, then likely William re-married and may be showing in later censuses with a different wife.

Regards.

Monica  :)

yup, that was her.

what a shame, she died of breast cancer at 28.  Odd thing though is that the informant was the undertaker  ??? never seen that before, has anyone else?

well i've managed to find out that they had at least one child born in 1883 denny apparently called Genny Gemmell Allan.  Thing is I really can't find William or his daughter anywhere which makes me wonder if he emigrated?  But you'd think with a job like a collliery manager he wouldn't leave it but maybe he was broken hearted with his wife dying so young

Hello Caroline,

I wonder if it would help you if you went on to the Fife Board where I have written very many postings about various families - including the Allans. A bit of a long shot, but, who knows?

Kind Regards,

Tom.

Have you looked for the daughter Genny Allan on the 1891 census, perhaps mistranscribed as Jenny. William may have moved elsewhere in Scotland to manage a colliery.

Hello
Only Jenny Allan and spelling variants marrying Scotlandwide between 1881 and 1932 is in 1914 - CLARK JOHN,  ALLAN JENNY,  DUNFERMLINE /FIFE 424/00 0216

There are a few others, but they all have middle names which are not remotely like Gemmell.  Good luck.  Regards,  Steve   :O)

Hi Caroline,

In Denny Cemetery there is a stone with the following inscription:

In loving memory of DAVID GEMMELL ALLAN died 5th October 1921 aged 61 years
His son ALEXANDER ALLAN, Pte. 6th Cameron Highlanders
Killed in action in France 31st July 1917 aged 19 years
His wife ANNIE WRIGHT ALLAN died 6th February 1952 aged 70 years

If you visit: http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=253&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15&mforum=scottishwargraves you'll see a photo of the stone on the Scottish War Graves Project (Page 2)

This family may/may not be any relation to the ones you're looking for but I thought having Gemmel as a middle name a bit of a co-incidence.

Denny & Camelon (Falkirk) Cemetery are both full of Allans as it's a very common name around that neck of the woods.
