Boyd - Thomson family Dungiven
« on: Saturday 01 March 08 20:57 GMT (UK) »
A Margaret Thomson of Dungiven married Joseph Boyd in dungiven 11 June 1877 and had 2 sons, Joseph & William.  Her husband Joseph died from a fall in Limavady in 1880 and Margaret went to America either the same year or early 1881, leaving the boys behind with grandparents.  She never came back.  Woudl anyone be able to help with information on what ship she might have sailed on and to where?

Betty

Hello Betty,

A few thoughts spring to mind ...

1. Margaret probably sailed from Derry.
2. I wonder if she travelled by herself, with a friend or with a group.
3. It might be worth having a look at the Derry Journal which was first published in 1772.

I hope the above help others in coming up with more suggestions which may assist you.

Christopher

Betty, by now you might have been able to find more information but if you haven't done so the following might be of interest.

If she went to New York you could try www.castlegarden.org to see if she's listed but unfortunately the passenger lists give few details unlike the later ones from Ellis Island.

Let us know if you get any more leads on her. It's too bad she didn't go to U.S. before 1880 census as next U.S. census is not until 1900.
