Lamb family from Newcastle
« on: Sunday 02 March 08 21:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am researching the Lamb family from the Elswick and Westgate areas of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and would love to make a connection with anyone else researching the same family.

I have found that William Lamb (b. Newcastle c.1819) married Mary Watson (b.Newcastle c.1822) at St. John's in Newcastle in 1840. Their children were:-

Ann Elizabeth Lamb (1841-) m. Elijah Copland in 1870;

John Lamb (1842-1880) (b.Earsdon);

Elizabeth Lamb (1845-) m. James Davison in 1870;

Thomas Lamb (1847-) m. Margaret Jane Scott in 1870;

Edward Lamb (1849- ) m. Sarah Jordan in 1885;

William Lamb (1851-) m. Sarah Ann Curry in 1874. Their son Matthew Ridley Lamb (1879-1916) died of wounds received in France in 1916 and is buried in St. John's Cemetery, Westgate, Newcastle. - see grave below;

Matthew Ridley Lamb (1854-1936) m. Margaret Mary Harrison in 1879. Their son, Lawrence Lamb was killed at the Somme in 1916;

Margaret Lamb (1856-);

Stephen Lamb (1858-) m. Elizabeth Ann Stark in 1894;

Henry Forster Lamb (1862-1915) m. Sarah Jane Stainsby in 1884;

Richard Lamb (1864-) m. Lydia Victoria Donkin in 1894.

If anybody is researching any of these lines, I would love to hear from you,

Regards,

Darin.

Hi Stephen

I have gathered quite a bit of information on the Lamb's, but as yet I haven't connected with anyone researching the same line.

Which line do you descend from?

Thanks,

Darin.

Hello, my name is Robert Yale. I am Canadian. My step-grandfather was Matthew Lamb, my grandmother  was Maria Lamb (Zrelec), my mother is Rada Yale (Zrelec), my late uncle was Bodizar Zrelec, my late father wasJohn E. Yale. From what I can remember of him he came from a very poor working class background, and was a Georgie. As a very young boy of about ten he worked in the local coal or slate mines. At the age of fifteen he enlisted in the British Army and rose to the rank of Sergeant in the Durham Light Infantry. He fought, and was wounded and escaped many times in North Africa and in Italy. He met my grandmother some where in southern  Germany near the end of 1944. She was in a work camp, and he had been captured and was in a POW camp  right next to the work camp. They married soon after the war, and eventually returned to the Newcastle area. They lived in a quaint  home at 60 Coldridge Ave in Gateshead. He worked at the Dunlop rubber and tire factory down in the valley from when he left the army until his death in 1979. He died of cancer of the pancreas. He was a wonderful  man.

4452162 Pte Matthew Lamb served with  'C' Company, 1st Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, in Shanghai, China in 1938,The 1st Battalion The Durham Light Infantry moved to the Western Desert on the outbreak of war via Hong Kong . Matthew was wounded on the 15th May 1941 at Fort Capuzzo in Libya. Following his recovery he remained in the Western Desert and although he was still listed with 1st DLI he appears to have been attached to one of the three territorial units of the Regiment (6th/8th or 9th DLI) and was posted missing on the 28th June 1942 during the German assault at Gazala. Later confirmed as a prisoner of war.
Matthew was held initially by the Italians ,who took responsibility for all allied PoW`s captured in Western Desert. The Italians moved Matthew to Italy where he was held at Campo 57 Gruppignano, Fruili, Northern Italy.
 Following the Italian surrender in 1943 the Germans took control of the prisoners and moved them to Germany and their occupied lands, Matthew Lamb was given the Prisoner of War number 6842 and was held at Stalag XVIIIA (18 A ) prisoner-of-war camp located to the south of the town of Wolfsberg, in the southern Austrian state of Carinthia, then a part of Nazi Germany. He remained in captivity until his release in 1945.
Matthew Lamb`s army number 4452162 comes from Army Book 358, Register of Soldiers, Durham Light Infantry,Book no. 18,This covers  nos. 4452000 - 4452999, and the enlistment period from  13th  May 1936 - May 1938.
Any photographs of Matthew during his time with the DLI ?
Background and information on the actions at Fort Capuzzo can be found on my website along with other campaigns,

Hope this helps
