Hi Jan,

Yawn...attempting to wake up in Wellington.  Dark, overcast, and not my cup of tea.  Hope it's better where you are today.  Not really wanting to go to work - much more fun to dig up your family - ha!

Have a good one.

Cheers

Hi Jan,

Man, you get all the luck!  Hope you've done your weekly shop  :D.  So while you have nothing better to do (yeah, right!) go here http://hamilton.co.nz/page/pageid/2145832680 and say hello to your uncle and his family, and then go here http://www.purewa.co.nz/search.asp to find someone with the most obvious name (and probably his family too - looks like there was a lot of transplants looking at the years).

When you get stuck just e-me and I'll have a look.  Got one more source to check out when I get home from work.

Your family are just all over the place (you lucky thing - at least they can be found).

Cheers

Hi Bunny
I knew Bessie was buried in Hamilton but wouldn't have thought of looking for other there, or for looking at Purewa (although heaps of other family branches are buried there.
what sort of a name do you think Ughtred is??
Thanks again

Hi Jan,

Ummm...I wasn't quite sure but it seems to be his and true.  Not a spelling mistake.  This site http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacifgw/archive/nzakstba.txt has him listed as donating a window to St Barnabas Church, Mt Eden, Auckland in his wife's name....entry above states her name to be Margaret.

Dum de doo - sticking families together..stitch, glue, press.  Oh, and the name appears to be one of early Saxon use taken from Scandanavia and means 'thought-counsel' and is thought to be close to the name Alfred.

Happy that you're finding family all over the place  ;D.  Gives one a nice warm feeling (oh, that's the cat!).

Cheers

Oh, and you're going to love this one.  Go here http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz and use the search box.  If you are quite specific with names you will find Manly Hitchon and Henry Horton Hitchon and some other interesting stuff.  Be aware that not all content in the site is searchable but it can still be accessed manually, if you understand that.  You will learn where your uncle got his middle name from.  And if you put in Waiwera Hitchon you will find out when Manly left the south to move north (assumption).

You might as well just write a book.

Cheers

Funny Bunny!!
Well just googled Ughtred - apparently it's an old Northumbrian name, and originated in Suffolk, another form is Utrect (looks scandinavian, perhaps) Ughtred was also the christian name of the 1st Baron Shuttleworth (whoever he was) and is known as a christian name in UK since 0971 - very intriguing!!
Do you know if there is anywhere to find early NZ marriages - Margaret appears to have been born abt 1864.

I do have a disc with some of that type of stuff but have to uncover it from out the back tomorrow.  There is precious little that one can find online regarding NZ BDM.

All I have to do is remember to do it  :D
