Mancheste Regiment in Penang, 1950s?
« on: Tuesday 04 March 08 10:29 GMT (UK) »
Can any of the Manchester Regiment researchers help me find birth record/home address for:

Private Edward McGibbon
Manchester Regiment
Service no  22420513
born     29 June 1937, Manchester
died    27 August 1951  age 14  :'( :'(

Grave no 2139,  Western Road Christian Cemetary, Penang

Got this from http://www.forcesmemorial.org.uk/roll-of-honour/roll-of-honour-profile.asp?profile=98289

I can't find him in the bmds, was wondering if the year or place of birth might be wrong.

 :) Barbara

Barbara,

There is a birth registered in Manchester in 1932 (8d 780 July-Sept) of an Edward McGibbon. Mothers name was Donohue.

14 seems a bit young to have joined up and be serving abroad, even in 1951.

I'd bet that 1937 is a mistranscription of 1932, and that the 14 is derived from it. It would be very unusual for a gravestone to mention bot dates of birth and death and an age.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

7 and 2 can look similar can't they?
I'd gone through the complete bmds 1935-1938 and there was nothing, so 1932 looks good.
Can't place the mothers name Donohue, but registered Manchester North would be right for a branch of my grandmother's family.
I didn't know anything about the 'Malayan Emergency'. Manchester Regiment website at Tameside says they were posted to Malaya 30th May 1951, so this poor lad only lasted a few weeks there.

Hello Barbara
I called into the museum of the Manchester Regiment in Ashton under Lyne to see if I could help you .
Unfortunately , they mainly concentrate on the regiment many years ago and could assist with the regiment's deployment and the census records of the 1841 to 1901 .
They looked at the website findmypast.com (military records) and found the report of Edwards death .
The website clearly shows him as 19 years of age at the time of his death so the 1932 birth looks good . Probably best to get the birth certificate if needed but the researcher was not sure whether any information could have been passed to me anyway as 1951 is fairly recent but I am sure you would have no problem if you are related .
Eric

Thanks very much for taking the time Eric  :D :D. That sorts out the date of birth a bit.
I think Edward might be a descendant of my gt-grandfather's brother, so not a very close relative - I came across the record while looking for someone else, as you do  :) Now to find this McGibbon/Donohue marriage!
I found mention online of a book called 'Jungle Bashers' by Robert Bonner about the Manchester Regiment's tour of duty in Malaysia. Fairly pricy at £20, so I will order it from the library to see if he's in there.

Thanks again
 :) Barbara

Hi! I know it was a long time ago that this was asked but did anyone come back with an address for Pte Edward McGibbon before he joined the Army and subsequently lost his life in Malaya?
