Edwin Chapman
« on: Friday 07 March 08 00:05 GMT (UK) »
Please help. I have spent years looking for this one.

I have his daughters marriage cert. It names him and gives his job as a finisher.
She (Elizabeth was born 1831) was married to Samuel Harrison at Manchester Cathedral.
She was born in Manchester or Salford.

But I cannot find Edwin.

Where are you????????

Hello topmarx

I don't know whether you have considered the possibility that Edwin may have died prior to the marriage of daughter Elizabeth to Samuel in 1852 .
I have come across this twice in my research where the name of the father is recorded in the marriage register and I can prove that he had already died . No mention was made in the register
of that fact .
Please forgive me if you have knowledge that he was definitely alive at the time or after .

I notice that on the Genuki site there is an Edwin CHAPMAN  registered as a death in the Manchester area December quarter 1845, but due to the year no age could be given as the recording of ages did not start till 1866 . I cannot see any others that would fit the bill , but it may not be a full list .   If you have a possible birth date for Edwin , I would consider writing to the Manchester registrars together with the application form and fee . If they believe that your facts do not match the certificate I have always found that they do not issue it and the fee is returned  . I don't suppose that you have anything to lose .
Good luck
Eric

Have you found any of them in the 41 or 51 census? Do you know of any other siblings?

Take names with a pinch of salt until you can prove it, I have a marriage cert and an older brother was but on as his father. The person who got married his father died when he was 6 so never knew him, and must have looked up to his brother.

Regards
Ken

It has been suggested to me that Edwin could have been mis transcribed But how do you know?

I have no idea of his birth year or if there were any other children than Elizabeth.

I did find a family living in Salford and children born in Salford
with a  child named Elizabeth who was 20 and worked in the mill as she did.

I think it was the cencus before she married.

How can I find out if this is her?
The mother Mary is a widow aged 52

Hello topmarx
I appreciate your problems and don't want to add anymore but in the Trade Directory for Manchester and Salford (SLATERS) 1863 there is an Edwin CHAPMAN , shown as a packing case maker of 1 Burton Street , Hulme .

It would be impossible to say whether this is your man but my thoughts are that it might help for a look up on 1861 census .
I know some census records have been unfilmed and I only have access to 1851 for Ardwick transcribed by the Manchester FHS . He is not shown on it .
I don't know whether there is similar for 1861 , nor do I know how accurate the trade dircetories are when being compiled .

Thank you Eric for even finding an Edwin Chapman. I will look at the 1861 to see if this is he.

This is only the 2nd Edwin to be found. Thanks again
