CONGERTONS/COOKS of Normanby/Eston/Grangetown
« on: Friday 07 March 08 01:32 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information on my Great Great Grandmother Maria Jane Cook (nee Congerton) Born 1871 Normanby she Married William Cook in 1888 born Circa 1864 in Sunderland Durham. Maria's mother was Elizabeth Congerton (nee Green) born Circa 1844 Kirby Moorside and father was William Congerton from Trimdon. Maria had 11 children...one of them being Victoria May Cook born 1906 in Grangetown (my Great Grandmother).

William Cook worked in the coal mines and later on became the caretaker of Grangetown Public Baths. Does anyone have any Cooks or Congertons in their family tree? Or no any information about them?

Hello Hazel,

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Would you like to tell us exactly what information you would still like to find about Maria, William and their parents?  Do you have all census for the family, birth marriage death information?

I am trying to find out all of the names of Maria Cook's Children, she had 11 all together 6 before 1901 and my Great Grandmother in 1906. I am also finding it hard to find William Cooks parents and siblings, they came from Sunderland, Co Durham. He had a brother Herbert born circa 1860, however I have no idea what his parents were called! I can't find William cook on a census before 1891!

Hi Hazel,

Their marriage cert would give you William's father's name and occupation, which would help a bit.

You can order it direct from the register office at http://www.middlesbrough-indexes.co.uk

In the birth registrations, mothers' maiden names not given until 1911, so the only birth I can see with mother's maiden name Congerton is Norman b.Jun Qu 1913 Middlesbrough

Will have a look in the census for them

They don't seem to want to be found, I'm wondering if their mother maybe remarried and they took stepfather's name then reverted to Cook later, or I need new specs!

Think you're going to need that marriage certificate
