Sussex Fam History website displays an Extra Persons Index - names are listed under the headings:
Extra Person Date of Marriage Name on which to Search
My question is what do the first and last heading actually mean?

Just a guess - witnesses or fathers maybe?
Now I hope someone who actually
knows
will be able to tell

I think you will find that it is a list of names extracted from the Sussex Marriage Index of the names of people OTHER than the bride or groom who appear. So they may be witnesses or bondsmen. The "Name on which to search" tells you which marriage and then the date of marriage - wll that's the other missing part!

If you google your question, lots of others seem to be asking it too. Tati seems to have the right answer - it relates to a name on a marriage record that is not one of the persons getting married

In the search, the name on which to search is (I think) the name of one of the parties to the marriage (or so it seems from some examples I saw)
