Luella,

The closest I came in Oswego was a William Cook, age 4, but he was born in NY. And his father, Eamon I think, was born in Ireland. Would this be them?

Thanks Kath,
On the 1881 Census George Wm. Cook is back in England.
He is 24 yrs. old ,married and definitely states Oswego.
His son age 2 is George.
His daughter,age 3,is Sarah.
Do you know if there is a list of those buried at Gettysburg?
In 1940,apparently grandma, was able to get a photo of his grave. This is hearsay and, as of yet,no one has been able to
locate the photo.
I toured Gettysburg,a few years ago but was unaware of any
relatives possibly buried there at the time.

Luella, well,  the closest I can come is

1860  Richland, Oswego, New York   Post Office:  Port Ontario

George Cook  Age: 9   Birth Year: abt 1851   Birthplace: New York
He seems to be on his own (in order showing) in this household

Frederick Frank  30 b. France  Merchant Taylor
Martha Daniels 31 b. NY
George Cook
Jane Frank 8 NY
Mary E Frank 5 NY
Elizabeth  Frank 1 NY
Phebe Godfrey 21 NY Seamstress
Loretta Hough 17 NY  Servant

Birth year is way off and not likely anyone could confuse an 8-year old with a 3-year old (unless there is an error) but thought the household was a bit interesting!

Burials in Gettysburg National Cemetery from all the different states that had soldiers in that battle.  (Scroll down about half way)  then look for New York

http://home.ptd.net/~nikki/sitemap.htm

At the below site,  see  Electronic Links for New Yorks contribution to the Civil War.

The 24th Regiment Infantry was known as the Oswego Co. Regiment  not that means  that's the only place George Cook could be found.

http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/historic/research/civilResearch.htm

Ancestry show 966 "Cooks" enlisted for the Civil War from New York.

Also,  note there are LOTS of unknown burials in the Civil War.

I go away for a day...  :D

I too saw that entry for George, but think it unlikely, because of what Lissa said about the age.

If his father died during the Civil War, there should be some military records to be had also.

and just to confuse matters a bit more, there is also an Owego, NY. I checked the census and nothing was there for a George Cook, age 3.

If you find him on one of the sites Lissa gave you, check out

http://www.raogk.org/pennsylv.htm

You should be able to get a picture.
